Work sent me to a small island in the Bahamas for a few days. No casinos or hotels here, just a cottages, two bars and a grocery store. The boat that I was working on left early and I had some time to kill. I rented a kayak and took off. I had a Vic Trekker, but my camera got waterlogged before I could take a picture so no knife pics... I was also molested by semi wild pigs who tried to steal my lunch. I attempted to fend them off with the paddle, but I was forced to retreat. It reminded me of the scene from the 'The Bounty'

Here is a reinactment of my encounter with the pigs. I'm played by the ship's crew. The pigs are played by the natives and my pride is played by the guy who catches a spear in the back.

What a beautiful place!!! I guess if you had to pic a place to get stranded for a while that would be one of them.

Looks like my kind of place.
What was the name of the island?
Are any of those cottages for rent? How much?
What is the cost of living there, such as cost of a beer in the bar or at the store, a loaf of bread, carton of milk, can of beans, etc.

Oh man that makes me jealous. Great looking pics, that really looks like a place someone could just relax and get away from it all.

It was probably one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been, but it's not for everyone. This is going to sound like I'm knocking it, but I'm not. I'd go back right now if I could. There is no shopping or casinos. There is the bar, the docks, the island and the water. Don't assume that you will be able to get anything on the island and pack like you are going camping.

It was Staniel Cay, in the Exumas. A round trip flight on a puddle-jumper out of Ft Lauderdale is about $550. The cottage was paid for by the yacht owner, but I think that they go for $150 and up. The cottage that I stayed at is not a part of the 'resort', but was rented out by a local lady. The 'Yacht Club' is a bar (not that I minded.) There are chickens running around and dogs sleeping in the road. The locals are friendly.

Food is expensive there. The locals shop on another island and the part-time residents have their food brought in on the plane or bring it with them. The grocery stores are for the tourists. A loaf of bread is $5 at the small bakery that was in some lady's kichen and canned chef boy-r-dee is $3. There are two restaurant / bars, but one was only open once in the time I was there. Beers are $4 at the bar or store. The store has Guinness Export. Burgers are $15.

The kayak was $20 per day, but they wouldn't let me take it overnight. It took on about 5 gallons of water in 4 hours. They sell pretty good charts in the bar of the local islands for $6.

If I was going there for an extended stay, I'd bring a cooler full of steaks and cold cuts, a portable propane grill, a box of other foodstuffs and a case of water. And a bottle of rum. I have no idea how to bring a kayak over there, but I would try my hardest. I was talking to a couple of guys in the bar who had just finished a 10 day paddle south through the Exumas. They camped on the beach every night.

Crazy paint on the wall of the cottage, Mikeal. I'm thinking 'sashimi'. $550 from FLL, and we're only 50 miles west of there.

Are you going down to the Fakahatchee with the FH crew, Saturday?

Chris

It's my nephew's first b-day on Saturday, so I'm not going to be able to make it.

The paint is all done by the lady who owns the cottages.

If you have the means (I don't,) the $550 is well worth it. You fly out of the FL business airport, breeze through customs and you are on the island in two hours.

Although you could probably get to Europe off season for a little more...

Enjoy the little fella's first birthday.

I'm still up in the air about the Fak on Saturday. At some point, our paths will cross.
