Looks like the lifecycle on the XP operating system is running out the way I read it. But I'm pretty computer illiterate so I may not know what I'm talking about. ;)
Just thought I would give everyone a heads up that has XP and doesn't have the SP2.:D
I had too copy the link by hand because for some reason I can't copy and paste URLs to the message box in BFC?
If it's not right go to the Microsoft update website, that's where I found the notice.
http://support.microsoft.com/?LN=en-us&scid=gp%3B%5Bln%5D%3Blifecycle&x=10&y=8

I got it and deleted it, beacuse it made my printer and scanner- both HP, came with the comp- fail to work. I don't care what "special" features it has, if I can't print, I don't want it.

after my imac's e-card died, I've been using this win 98 unit. I have to say, MS makes the absolute crappiest software out there. I'm getting another mac, or mine fixed before I go insane. Why on earth would you release software that constantly falls apart? or would get hacked into by every 2-bit retard with a computer at home? With all of the updates, 98 should now be bulletproof-it's 5 years old at least!
Yours, Joe

I vote for linux as well...If other people (the parent folk) didn't use the computer I generally use, I would have it on my machine. However, they do and they are very computer illiterate. Need to save up for a computer rather then buy knives...eh, second thought...

I dont care what OS I use as long as it works, my XP home edition does me fine with no problems...

I don't *mind* Windows, really. It's got good intentions. I'm running Windows XP Pro on the computer I access this website with, actually. But only because in my current position in life I HAVE to be able to play well with others as far as technology goes. My backup computer is running Linux (Fedora Core) and I use it a lot, many times more than this primary computer. But it's those few instances where I have to have Windows that makes it a lifesaver. .

Anybody know when Longhorn is coming out as a released OS??

Since I work in the field of computer security I am a huge fan of ensuring you have all the updates installed on your PC regardless of the collateral issues like printer down time etc. Those are all issues that can be corrected but it is real hard to correct what a hacker has done to your system. XP has some gaping hole in it and if you allow them to exist you are at risk especially if you have "always on" access to the internet.

Aside from people spinning up your hard drive some of the things I have seen happen incude:

Total and complete ID theft and theft of all your financial data and passwords to web based financial solutions. Especially if you have all your financial data on a program like Quicken.

Your Pc turned into a zombie which is used to attack other PCs or companies as well as Gov't sites

Your PC used to store bad stuff or transmit bad stuff like Child porn

It is a serious issue and I deal with the end result on a daily basis and hate to see good people screwed over. One of the best ways to stop this is update your anti virus and firewall software as well as the OS updates.

It can be a pain in the arse I know but the alternative is far more harmful if carried to the extreme. The above issues are just a sample and can result in financial problems or even criminal investigations.

Please make my life easier and shore up your defenses. These dirtbags from Romania, russia, urkraine and some asian areas like Malaysia are the best in the biz and I can guarantee if you have always on access and vulnerabilities they will find you. They run "scripts" or computer programs that search literally hundreds of thousands of PCs a day. Those of you with good protection probably see many of these attacks everyday. Imagine if your PC was "wide open"

Computers are VERY powerful tools but with them come responsibility.

Ok off my soap box thanks for listening I just want you all to be safe...

you can survive with a good firewall (zone alarm) and the normal updates if you don't want the SP2 on your computer.
