For those that are into Music..the new iPod..amazing

R:
I got an ipod for christmas. Let me say first that I am an apple computer user, and always have been. That said, the ipod is the greatest invention since sliced bread. I have one of the 20gb models. I have several hundred CDs worth of music on it. It's enough for every mood, everyone, everywhere. I find that I take it with me all of the time. In my truck, I plug it into the car stereo via a casette adapter, at work I plug it into a good boom box via an imput jack. When I travel, I use Bose noise canceling headphones, and zone away. I have spent countless hours loading every imaginable CD into my hard drive so that I can change around what is in my ipod according to my whims.
I think that if you are really into music, and you like to have it where ever you go.....the ipod is the answer.
As I sit here typing this, I have several boxes of CDs on the floor, and individual boxes piled up all over my desk as I have been loading more and more onto my hard drive.

yours in podz,

I've got a 20GB Archos. It does its job very nicely, but I still lust after an iPod. Congrats on the new toy! :D

how's the ipod with respect to shock resistance? anyone take it running so far?

not running, but it has been in my truck while I was 4 wheeling and has not skipped a beat. I got one of the ipod "jam jackets" (www.everythingipod.com) it is a translucent rubber envelope/jacket for it. It keeps it clean and scratch free as well as making it slide proof where ever you lay it.
I have never had the ipod skip as it were.

I bought a Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 MP3 player. It's another 20 gb hard drive based MP3 player. I paid over $300 for it.

I want to return it.

It has the absolutely worst interface of ANYTHING I've ever used. Some of the most basic functions are virtually impossible to perform.

Want to just turn it on and hear some mp3's? You can't. You can play one song. Then you have to go thru multiple keypresses to select another song. Try that while driving your car. Sure, you can use the shuffle function. Problem is, it picks like 12 songs and plays em over and over. Even though I have thousands of mp3's on the drive.

I've had to reboot mine like 200 times? And I've only had it 2 months? Sometime, I can't even turn it on without removing and replacing the battery. Don't ask.

There are multiple levels of the interface that look the same. But you can only perform certain functions at certain levels. Confusing as hell.

The buttons to fast forward, reverse, and skip forward and back are the same. So, if you want to fast forward a bit, and you don't hold the button down long enough, you will go to another track. At least, I think you will. The thing is so damm confusing, and I have a Masters Degree and worked with computers for a major university....

It's very difficult to delete songs. The reason for that is on recordings, you cant name a song. You just get a time stamp like a dos file. Useless since you can't set a real time clock, and your system crashes daily. So, it's easy to delete, you just don't know what the hell you are deleting.

The thing has actually duplicated files for no reason. That's right, it copied 'em for no reason.

Oh, some songs I want to delete I can't, because the player crashes. I'm screwed there, no solution.

It does have good points, however. Sound quality is excellent. It's easy to record with the player from any audio source. And battery life is excellent. I think I can run the thing for 9 hours on 1 battery, and it can take two.

I wouldn't recommend this thing to Sadaam Hussein. Did I mention I was supposed to get a $50 rebate, too, which was never sent! That for over $300 dollars Creative was so cheap you get NO printed manual of any kind - not even a quick start brochure - just a PDF file on the CD. And that it come with NOTHING to carry it in at all?

Absolutely the worst interface of anything I have ever seen. I'm amazed any company could release a product this bad.

Yeah, you are right John. I'm gonna post there. I consider it my civic duty to save some other poor schmuck $325.

Is there any loss in fidelity from the cd to the ipod?
MP3 is lossy compression, like jpeg, so there are trade-offs between size and fidelity. The encoding programs have parameters for how much you want the file to be compressed. You pretty much have to decide for yourself what sounds good on your MP3 player.

Crookshanks:
If I can elaborate on Ewoks comment. I can only speak of using a Mac and an ipod. When you import the music for the ipod, you have a choice of what format you use to import the music. With higher compression you have a greater loss of fidelity. I import using the least amount of compression. I play my ipod through either Bose noise reduction headphones, an adapter for my car stereo or a large 60W JVC boombox that has pretty good sound from it. I can not find any loss of sound when played through these as compared with listening to a CD. I have yet to buy an adapter for my home stereo. I guess my comment would be that the majority of usage of the ipod is for "portable music", the quality of the sound is as good as playing cds on any portable player. That said, the sound is excellent with no loss of quality noted, with the added advantage having HUNDREDS of CDs worth of music. I hope that this helps.

Yes, you can rund with this iPod and it won't skip. You can skip with the iPod and it won't skip. I dropped my iPod and it still works fine.

I read that some company is developing a ski jacket with holder for the iPod, with the controls on large buttons on the sleeve of the jacket. You can change your music selections and stuff without having to yank out the iPod and press its buttons directly.

Bought one of them for my wife and now she brings them to workout with. No more CD player and going through handling bunches of CD's.

I have a 20GB Nomad Jukebox Zen. Love it. Do like the looks of the new iPOD too and the size.

My only concerns are:
1. Price
2. Known flawed battery and decreased life.
3. What features are lost buying the Windows version.

I would like to know about these two. There are some good reviews on TechTV.com, but that was some time ago, before the windows version of Ipod I believe.

the ipod's looking better and better now
now to think about the price tag

Went to the Apple store today and checked out the player. Very small and light, noticeable improvement size wise over the older version. Went to one of their notebooks and went to the iPod webpage and tried to do some research. One notable fault in the Windows version is the delayed firmware and enhancements. They claim the new update will appear June. I'd wait til after it is released before getting one. Also I don't see how the notes and contacts would work with Windows? Is it integrated into Outlook?

Warning: Stupid Question Ahead

Can I use the iPod with a Windows System, or is it only made for Apple Computers?

What is the best MP3 player for Windows Systems?

Yes, the iPod works with Windows. Right now, the latest iPod is a little behind in the firmware support for AAC files. Other than that, it's great under Windows.

I have an older 20GB iPod, and I had a 10GB iPod before that. The iPod comes with software to work under Windows, but I chose to purchase XPlay software for mine. It integrates my iPod into the Windows Explorer interface and is so much easier to use. I can drag files on and off the iPod. Check it out here: www.mediafour.com

i've had the orriganal iPod for over a year now. I am stil impressed with it, however it does have some issues. The spinning wheel on mine has stopped working, however this is no longer a problem because the newer models have surfaces like a laptop touch pad, no moving parts. However, the problem that i believe even new models have is the battery. As far as I know, there is no way to replace it. This isn't an issue at 1st because the battery lasts for around 10 hours. However, over time this battery life shrinks considerably. My iPod is about a year and a half old and the battery life for it is around 2 hours of play. The battery also only stays charged for a day or so. A full charge won't play more for more than 5 min the next day. Does anyone know of a way to replace the internal battery? As I see it, this is the only problem on an otherwise very nice mp3 player. I especially like how it can be used as an external hard drive. You can install an operating system on it if you want and use it as an external backup for important files.
