For those that have held both, what's your fav? Rat 9 or Chopweiler?

Darn near an Apples vs Oranges scenario there.

Between the two I'd have to lean towards the Chopwieler as the handle is more traditional to my grip.

Though, having used my Ratmastiff extensively, I love the extra length of the blade when chopping and/or processing wood. A little more sticking out the other end of the log to hammer on with the maul when using as a froe.

No help what so ever I know, :o

Rat 9 for me, even though it's bigger. It simply felt better in-hand than the Chopweiler, which I later ended up selling.

The R9 is considerably longer than the Choppy, they are pretty different knives. I like them both for different reasons. I like the Choppy because it is a no fuss design and meant to be flogged. The differential heat treated blade with beautiful convex edge is very good for all sorts of tasks from heavy work to fine-ish slicing. The R9 makes a fantastic long chopper and is my favourite large blade to use in the kitchen for slicing whole sirloins and splitting bones. Both awesome knives in different ways.

From an ergonomics standpoint, its hard to beat a Chopweiler! It is pretty close to being perfect IMHO...

Rob, for you the question should be R9 or M9!
And I'd actually would like to hear the answer.

I've passed on R9, just didn't feel right to me... the handle bump...
Now, if the Chop Mastiff got actually released... there would be a clear winner!

If you guys don't mind me jumping in again...the M9 is another ergonomic dream! Feels so good in the hand, and has a wonderful balance for a saber ground 9" bowie. If there was a 9" jack-of-all-trades...the M9 would be the one.

Very true statement!

I'd choose the Basic 10 LE over anything mentioned already in this thread, if you haven't got the fund then I'd say go straight for the SYKCO 911. I do like the Rodent 9 from my brief experience with it, but I like the res-c handles more on a chopper. Can't comment on the Chop/Ratweiler, M9, etc as I've never handled them. All in all I think you'd be happy with any that you choose, assuming you don't mind having a choiled blade.

That is a toughie!!!! I love them both and I love the handle bump in the new Rodent series. It works with my technique beautifully and I find it very comfortable. The M9 would probably be a nose ahead in the 'like' department as I really like its blade design more.

I have both and I would choose the Chopweiler for its more useful for a wider set of tasks and easier to carry. It truly is a top 3 knives in my collection. It also chops great for its size. Really the only benifitsits in the R9 is battoning really.
