For those that line their sheaths - where do you get your leather?

I am looking for a good source for Pig, deer, Bison, and perhaps other material to line wallets with or in the case of Bison make wallets out of. For those that line their work - where should I look?

Tal, if you happen to be buying your leather from Wicket&Craig, look no further than their splitter to get you some 2 oz veg. tan just like the body of your work. That's what I used to do until I got the Cobra 14 splitter, and now I use up the belly leather for the 2 oz needs.

Deer skin, I use Warden Leather 518 332 1016 talk to Brad, tell him I sent you. I don't use Pig skin or Bison so can't help you there.

Amongst other things, I have bought 1/2oz veg tanned pig from ST Leather. Unfortunately it's not the absolute best as it does have some odd coloring (light spots), but it feels very nice and takes dye just fine. I think it was like $1.99/ft so I wasn't expecting much. I'm pleased with it considering what it cost, but I'll likely just use the good parts.

I wish we were able to have a resources thread because a lot of this information could easily be listed in a sticky. Dwayne, anything ever come of this?

Nothing yet, I'm still campaigning for more freedom with the sub forum but so far the other larger forum issues are taking precedence. Be patient and we'll get it set up the best way possible. Other new ideas are flowing as well that are very exciting, stay tuned.

Talf, I line my sheaths with veggie cowhide, sometimes 2/3 ounce. Others I've been moving to a split between 5/6 top and 3/4 or 4/5 depending on how thick the customer wants it. Its a cost effective alternative to the more and more expensive 8/9 ounce leather. If you'll notice how inexpensive the #1 grade sides are for 3 to 6 ounces in weight? Its amazing. I line everything that has a snap on the top so cost savings are a big deal when the leather is getting close to 10 bucks a square foot for the good stuff. The cost doesn't go down till you get to the 10 ounce and above which is way too thick for sheaths.

Ah thanks. I think it's been a couple of months. Didn't know that it was still on the table. I know Spark's been busy lately too.

Looking forward to whatever might be exciting. :)

Dwayne,

Don't you buy your stuff locally? I thought that is what you said.

Uh yup! I get all my leather from the Leather Factory on Mobud here in San Antonio. Take a peek what that pre dyed shoulder leather costs, the black and tan I have cost me nearly ten bucks a square. But ya know, worth every penny so far. I love the stuff.

Aren't there places that will split it to whatever thickness you want? That price seems awfully steep.

If the stuff I just ordered is good (I'll know soon hopefully) I'll be buying all of my stuff from the Hide House. Shout out to Horsewright for that. Their prices seem very good. A side benefit is that they are in Napa right by my daughter so I'll poke my head in soon and skip the shipping fees.

I think you may have them muddled a little bit. The nice thin lining leather I get for well under five a square. Honestly I dont care about range marks when its inside a sheath, and I can work around holes.

The expensive stuff is either from Europe or is through dyed, not to be confused with drum dyed. Drum dyed still has a core of natural color. I get the through dyed leather for those hard use sheaths and gear. I dont want someone to buy a black sheath and scrub off the thin layer of color and expose natural leather. If I can offer a sheath or belt or what not that will show black even when gouged, then I'll do it. :)

The European leather is simply the holy grail to me, I've never seen anything like it. Its only for very special work, and its not cheap work. A lot of that gear on safari gets this kind of stuff. Its for those kind of people who do not care what something costs, as long as its the best of the best. When you carry a ten thousand dollar double rifle and a three thousand dollar knife, what little does a few hundred or even a thousand mean for the rigs to store and carry them in. :D
