I posted my thread asking for some trusting person to let me borrow their Sebenza so I could form my own personal opinion of them. Many of you thought I would have been better off asking to borrow someone's wife (this will be my next venture). Anyway, some of you just have no faith in the kind of people that frequent these forums. There really are some truly generous people out there. I say this because I have had someone e-mail me and offer to let me borrow their small classic sebbie for "a month or so". This person will remain anonymous unless he/she tells me otherwise. I just wanted to say a big thank you to them (you know who you are).
If you can't just go out and afford a Seb. to check out, then no, you can't borrow my wife! A famous actor once offered me a million dollars for a night with my wife. I told him to make it two million and he could have her for a week!
Guess I won't be able to borrow your wife then.:grumpy: 'Cause on a paramedic's pay, with a wife in nursing school, and a $300/month daycare payment (along with mortgage, and other bills), the money tends to run thin at the end of the month. This makes it hard (read: impossible) to afford a Sebbie right now. Now, when the wife graduates nursing school, I think a Sebbie would make a nice gift for me I mean, after all, I have put in endless overtime to make ends meet, and I think I deserve it. (hope she doesn't read this!)
I received the Small Classic 2000 today. Thanks to Rev. Pete. He is an outstanding individual, and very trusting to let me borrow his baby for a few weeks (I promise I'll take good care of it!)
Anyway, first impressions.
Man this knife is a lot smaller than I imagined. I never paid much attention to the specs on CR website. I was just going by everyone's description that the Large is huge and the small is just a bit smaller. Definitely seems like this knife is all blade. The blade takes up just about every bit of handle when folded. I guess I'm just used to the size of my Mini Commander, and figured that the small sebbie would be about the same size. It is really about 1 inch shorter. I'll post a pic of it compared to the Mini Commander, and the Al Mar Shrike I'm trying out right now.
The lock up is as solid, if not more than all the hype. I don't think I can do anything to make this knife fail!. In fact it is a bit of a pain to close the knife. I find that with the size of the knive, my fingers tend to fall directly on the back side of the locking bar, thus they push the opposite direction of my thumb. I have found that I can close it easier with my index finger if I just face the blade away from my body, unlock the knife, and close it using my leg. (sounds weird unless you see what I'm talking about)
Looks. Well, they're nothing to get excited about that's for sure, but I have to say that for a knife that is 2 years old and had been carried as an EDC for that entire time, it looks dang near NIB. I cannot see any real wear on the knife.
Did I mention this knife was SOLID? The attention to detail is something you really have to see to appreciate.
Somewhat slow to open. Not that I'm complaining, I'm just used to either being able to flick a knife open or opening it with the wave feature. The tension the locking bar places on the blade really makes it slow to open. This is one of the only knives I cannot flick open, except in the reverse grip (which I don't plan on doing routinely, I just wanted to see if I could do it)
It is smooth as glass, and has absolutely zero blade play when locked open. I wish I could say the same for my other knives.

Anyway, I really like this knife. Don't know if I could pay $300 for it, but I haven't had a chance to carry it and use it much to really decide yet. I do think that if I ever do break down and get a Sebenza, it will be a large decorated version. Either a Woodie, or Unique design version. I am the kind of person who likes form as well as function.
Again, thank you Rev. Pete for giving me this opportunity. Also, I got another response today from Gary Graley of G2 Sheaths offering to let me borrow his Large Sebbie. This goes to show you what kind of people make up this forum. This is absolutely the best forum I have participated in. Before coming here, I had no idea what a Sebenza was, and now, somebody who doesn't know me from Adam's house cat has let me borrow his for a while. This would never have been possible without forums like this and people like Rev. Pete and Gary Graley. Thank you guys.
Mike
Here is a pic of those 3 knives together for size comparison. That Shrike is a whole lotta knife!
I will say that my Large Seb is a whole lot smoother to open without the clip ( who needs a clip ?? ) as I now carry it in one of Gary Graley's Horizontal Sheaths.
I just sold my small Seb since I have been carrying the large Seb instead. After carrying the small Seb for a few months the large does indeed feel LARGE.
If you had told me years ago that I would be paying over $300 for a knife I would have called you nuts. However once handling a Seb and other quality knives I have seen the light. (( I must admit though that I bought both of my Sebs used , and the most I paid was $250 , both were bought off of members of BF )).
And since getting my Henchman , I have dreams of Blackwoods , Snody's and Rinaldi's......C'mon January..Vegas Classic
I didn't think you were crazy, hell I would have bet that someone would have lent one to you. Thats what is so great about this place. It's a congregation of some of the smartest, nicest, most trustworthy people on the internet. Hell when people ask why I am on here reading 8 hours a day, I explain its a knife collectors fraternity. B/C thats how I view this place. Rev Pete is a stand up guy as is Gary. Once I finally get a folder worthy of one of his sheaths, my order will be in. All in all, I feel like the day I discovered this place is up there with hitting the lottery. Maybe even better, as now I know what best to spend the winnings on. And yes folks, when I day dream about hitting the lottery (I do this frequently) I make sure to include monstrous custom giveaways. Take care all and Medic, does this mean we can just skip you on the Sebenza passaround and just include you in the raffle
(Edited to add, J/K so Medic doesn't think I am being an as-hole )

I don't think I should dignify that question with a response I want to be able to compare the large with the small. Plus, I'm looking forward to being able to say I paid only $35 for my Large Sebbie once I win it.
