Where are will you be staying ? I called the New Yorker hotel, where the show will be held, and found out that the best rate they have is $169 + tax per night. That's the knife show special deals, and we only get the room. They didn't even give me some show pass :(

Can you recommend me some good hotel (clean), not expensive, and in walking distance to the New Yorker hotel ?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, that's a pretty good rate for NYC. This town ain't cheap! I'll be coming in from NJ, so I just have to deal with train fare. It's even within walking distance from Penn Station. This will be the first time that I'm attending this one, but I did go to the ECCKS last March. That one was worth it - just to talk one-on-one with some of the great makers. Maybe someone else knows of a better hotel deal?

You could try www.expedia.com, or other travel related sites, but as fisherk said, that's really not a bad rate for a New York hotel room. And the New Yorker is not a fancy place either. Good luck with your search.:)

That's probally the best rate that you are going to find. You couls also try the times square hilton and the doubletree at time ssquare. The marriott and sheraton are around $250 a night. No hotel will be able to give you a show pass, they do not sponsor the show. It is an expensive show even for a maker. To do the show costs about $1000-1200 dollars for the weekend. Table fee, room fee, food, transportation ect.

and one thing that a lot of people forget is the excellent public transportation system we have. Look into Motels and Hotels in Long Island that are located near the Long Island Rail Road, or just upstate right by Metro-North rail road. You can stay cheap and be in midtown manhattan in half an hour or less.

Yes. There's a Holiday Inn in Rockville Centre that's right near the LIRR. That's not going to be cheap either, but it may be less expensive than midtown Manhattan..Also, the show site is only about a block from Penn Sta.

Ditto the Mutt's suggestion. Anything outside of Manhattan will be cheaper. Brooklyn hotels near the subways are another option.

$169 a night for that part of Manhattan is a GREAT rate.

Good Evening Everyone-

Been to NYC on business quite a few times. There is a very new Marriott at the Metrotech center in Brooklyn. AFAIR, it is literally a few steps away from the A/C/1/2/3/9 subway lines. Several large companies have their data-processing centers around there, hence the name.

It would only be about a fifteen or twenty minute ride to The New Yorker Hotel on that subway. The other good thing is that those lines run up along the "western" side of the island, so you stay very close to Penn Station on Eighth Avenue.

CitySearch is a good web site to use when you are traveling...regardless of destination. Just change the name of the city to suit your needs. Restaurants, hotels, sightseeing suggestions, etc., etc.

Regards,

Does anyone have any information about the show? I would like to attend but I have been able to find very little information about it. Thanks.

I would also check hotels and motels on Staten Island as well...ur just a ferry ride or an express bus ride right into downtown...

Well...thats where i'm coming from...;)

Ahhh, the NYC show an interesting event for sure. It's on Nov 1, 12 p.m. - 8 p.m. and 2, 10 a.m. - 6p.m. t the New Yorker hotel 481 8th avenue 34 street for more info you can call 516-781-5515 or 631-549-5191. It should be fun and thy've trimmed it back down to 2 days it was 3 days but th third day was usually pretty dead and all the makers ahd sold most of the knives by that time anyway. The average hotel cost in NYC is approx. minimum $150. a night. Sometimes you can get last minute cancellation deals but don't count on it. Even the more run down older hotels are now expensive, it really sucks ! If ya can get a NY Yellow pages. There are a lot of smaller hotels that may be cheaper but they are a train ride away from the hotel. There are some smaller joints on the lower east side and chelsea as well as the west village area that are cheaper but their names escape me. There's one on 24th Street between 5th and 6th ave's called La Semana that could be cheaper, it was at one time but maybe not nowadays. Real Estate is booming everywhere in NYC as there are more people moving in finding high paying work and less room for them to live in so even the worst neighborhoods are accomodating the influx of young middle class and wealthy people with money to spend on decent housing. Most neighborhoods being gentrifide and fixed up so, rents go up and so do the hotel prices as well as the price of food, SUCKS ! Bring lotsa cash fellas.....RDT

You could try the Glenpointe Marriott in Teaneck, NJ and then take the bus (picks up at the hotel every half hour or so until 10PM or so) to NYC for $2. Just confirm first as I haven't been there in awhile. Then you won't have to pay the $40 NY parking, ect.
The bus is like a box of chocolates, though - You never know what you'll get inside. Could be scary.

Here are a few hotels that have been pushing bargain rates recently:

Red Roof Inn
6 W 32nd St
1-212-643-7100
from $89/night

Chelsea Lodge
1-800-373-1116
from $105/night

Gershwin Hotel
1-212-545-8000
from $109/night

These are within a short bus or subway ride from the show. Bus or subway is $1.50/ride.

Hope this helps some of you. Look forward to seeing as many as possible.:)

You guys are fantastic! That's a lot of good hotel & travel information. I'll be coming in from NJ on the bus myself -- which is why AnklePocket warned you it can be scary -- but don't worry about the excellent public transportation in the metropolitan area. If one of us is drooling or chuckling quietly, we're all right. Just move off slowly and don't stare.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha :p

Wow, thanks a lot guys. I really didn't expect to get this many responds. You really help me save some $$.

Thanks again.
