Hey guys. I recently purchased a Lansky Sharpening System with diamond stones. I gotta say for 60-70 bucks it's NICE! It is very capable of getting your edge to induce confetti and pop hair. There are preset angles on the thing being :17, 20, 25, and 30 degrees. It's a noob machine that actually works quite nice especially if you don't wanna go freehanded. Don't get me wrong...I love me some freehanded sharpening. But for a quick razor edge...why not?

Nothing wrong with that. I have used one for many years. I like it to re-edge a knife that has gotten out of whack.

I have just gotten into sharpening knives, and the lansky kit seems to work good for me.. It works really well when I am "fixing" knives I have dulled trying to sharpen on a flat stone...

One thing that might help beginners is to color the edge with a sharpy marker to see where the kit is actually cutting...

Another thing to remember is to try to not go off the tip, or you will round it off.. I saw a video that gave me a little trick that works.. When I get the knife sharp, I take the final stone and pull the tip of the spine as flat on the spine as possible off the stone 3-5 times.. This puts a needle point on the blade and keeps it from rounding over... It works well on my leek..

I had one and could never get the thing to work. I finally gave it to someone and they made it work fine. Leave it to me to mess up a clamp and guide system and then do better freehanding on a belt sander.

Hahah..hey man no worries! Everybody works different ways...Assuming you went coarse, medium, the fine, ultra fine if you had it ...right? And don't follow the instructions on the thing...It's probably gonna take more than two cycles of 6 strokes to do anything..Do as many as it takes. Diamonds work better I believe.

There is nothing wrong with that. There different means to an end, alot of proven methods to get that awesome edge.

I experienced the same initial frustration with my Lansky kit when I first bought it. So much so, that I just put the system away for several years and basically forgot about it. Then, after I started hearing & reading about others' positive experiences with the Lansky setup, I decided to give it a second chance. There were basically two things that I finally did that made me a convert:

1. I bought a Lansky medium diamond hone (orange holder) to supplement my 'standard' Lansky kit. The diamond hone is much quicker at forming the burr. The burr, by the way, was my first genuine 'revelation' about sharpening. Prior to the first time, I was completely naive about the importance of forming the burr. I was even a bit shocked when I first noticed a little 'sliver' of steel break off of the edge, thought something was going wrong with my blade. But then it dawned on me that this was exactly the right thing that was happening. That was the first epiphany for me.

2. After using the medium diamond hone to get the burr, I used the fine 'standard' hone (blue holder), and then finished with the ultra-fine 'standard' hone (yellow holder). While finishing, I noticed that these two hones tended to produce a squeaking sound when I approached or arrived at that 'scary sharp' level. At first, I didn't realize the significance of that squeaking sound. But it dawned on me that it only made that sound when the edge was becoming extremely sharp. Now I look forward to hearing it, because it means it's working like it's supposed to. That was the 2nd epiphany.

Now, I'm just working at refining my technique (like avoiding rounding the tip, as mentioned earlier in the thread) & streamlining my routine with it.

You're going in the right direction.:p

Now start saving up your money for an Edge-Pro.

Kinda like a new, 21st century version of the old Lansky idea.

A little pricey, but it sharpens almost magically! :D
