Hi All,

New here, but I have an 18" HI sirupati, and I recently got a ke tri that I'm going to have fun cleaning up (usual rough edges and blems).

However, much as I love the way HI operates, I have one small issue:

I'm one of those left-handed types, and the one reason I don't use my sirupati as much as I'd like is that I'm not skilled at making sheaths, and HI seems to only sell right-handed khukuries and sheaths. It gets annoying to always be carrying the blade on the wrong side. I'd also point out that the sirupati itself is subtly right-handed. The hilt is not quite symmetrical, and it is more comfortable in the right hand. I've been working on it with a file to make it ambidextrous, and it's almost there.

Anyway, here's the question: Do any of you know any sheath makers who could make a left handed sheath for a reasonable rate? If so, please let me know.

If any of the kamis were willing to make a left-handed, mid-sized blade, I'd be happy to buy it. Ditto on a tarwar.

Thanks in advance,

F

Have you tried simply placing the scabbard in the frog backwards?

I know the karda & chakma would still be on the same side, but you could just take them out.

Hi Wolf,

On this sirupati, the frog is sewn into the scabbard. Otherwise, it would be less of a problem.

That's odd. I have four H.I. khukuris and a few from other companies and none of them have frogs sewn directly onto the scabbard.

Could you perhaps cut the stitching and resew it?

Looking at it again (i.e. prying the frog seams open as far as they'll go without ripping), the frog may not be sewn directly into the scabbard, but the fit is so tight that, as you noted, I'd have to cut the frog apart at the seams in order to get it loose. The HI sword I just got has a nice, reversible frog.

Flipping the sheath in the frog will only solve one problem, though, as I'm not fond of having the karda and chakmak on the outside. They tend to catch on things, which is not good. Since I use both, I'd rather have the full ensemble if possible.

I appreciate your suggestions, and I'm hoping that someone will recommend a sheath-maker.

Thanks,

F

There are some guys here on this forum who have successfully made their own scabbards.

I've also noted Ms Yangdu will often make a reference to a "sarki* shop" when posting a khukri which comes without a scabbard.

Perhaps tomorrow someone will reply to this thread with some useful info.

I have a vintage knife that is calling for one of those WWII style sheaths.
I think I'll send him an e-mail.
Has anyone else gotten one of these sheaths and what is the turnaround
time usually?

Its really not that tough a mod to do. Especially if you're willing to scrap the karda and chakma. Ditching them makes the rig a lot thinner too!

These times are when we miss Bri in Chi a LOT.

Hi Fiddleback,

You're right, of course. However, I like using the chakma to straighten out the dings before I re-sharpen the khukuri (a sirupati's pretty good for clearing brush on a slope, but it's hard to miss all the stones). Call me sentimental, but I'd rather have the fully functional set.
