EDIT: Original problem solved. Skip to post #11 for pics & info

Hi Yangdu,

I sent an email last night containing the sketches you had requested, and have yet to hear back. Perhaps AOL is giving issues again? Just making sure you received that.

Thanks!

She is in and out and a very busy girl and sometimes it takes a day or two to hear back, depending on how critical...mainly fields everything from everybody by self.....probably not a connection issue....

I know she's busy, but I've always heard back within 24 hours, and usually more like 24 minutes. She's amazingly fast, I'm impressed every time. The reason for this post is that we have had email issues in the past, and she told me to post on here if any communication issues should arise in the future, i.e. this time :)

I went ahead and recommended gmail to her, since I have noticed that I'm not the only one who's had periodic issues with emails.

Well, sometimes i hear back and sometimes it takes a while depending on the fire, but agree where you are coming from....i agree gmail a good one but headache to an email change we all know and i would hate to deal with such as a biz with a quarter century of contacts confused...and not on any current list of mine....

singlegr. are you requesting a custom? ill send her a note if you like. if you sent an attachment then it wouldnt surprise me if AOL lost it in space. Try shrinking the file size down to 200K or so and send again. It likely got choked up and spat out. Aunti may just be busy too?

Ndog, ya, I'm requesting customs. We had already spoken about it last week, and I was just finishing up the sketches. If you could please shoot her a quick email, that would be much appreciated.

Also the total attachment size is less than 400kb, with the larger pdf being 240kb. I am a little hesitant to compress things or anything like that, because I don't wanna make it too hard for Auntie to open. I can post pictures of my sketches on here if anyone is curious, but they're quite rough.

Thanks guys

Send them as pictures in the png format, this should keep them small, easy to open and high quality? Just a thoght.

Thank you Yangdu and everyone else. I'll post the sketches here as soon as I get to my computer and convert them, just so you all can see what's in the works!

Edit:

Here are the sketches of the customs I requested. Most of the important specs are in the pictures, so I'll share my thought process below each pic

The SG Chef's Knife is based on the blade of the Tamang or a Barong, fused with a more traditional chef's knife. The blade has a flatter part near the cho, like a chef's knife, but it has more of a belly, to aid in both chopping and slicing. The handle is basically straight off the Mini Bowie, I love mine so much. Originally, I wanted the handles for both to be bone, but then I decided the chef's knife would look better with wood. I saw a yellow dhar wood BDC on DOTD that caught my eye, so I requested dhar for the handle.

The SG Mini AK Cleaver is another original design, which is based on a traditional meat cleaver, but downsized. To me it's the perfect size, but decided to call it "Mini," just in case one of y'all happens to want a "full-sized" version :) It has one deep fuller on the spine, like the AKs, and a bump at the nose of the blade. Both of these are to bring the weight forward, in order to give the knife the chopping power I want while maintaining a smaller package overall. The handle is the same as the Chef's knife, but I requested bone.

Please share your thoughts about the knives, I'd love to hear 'em!

This chef's knife could serve you excellently in case you are attacked while cooking. I guess this was also on your mind? :D

Moonw: I was actually having a hard enough time incorporating the function of a chef's knife with an HI feel. I kinda had this idea in my head that the blades for both would feature a dui chirra design, but because of the thickness, or rather thinness, of the blade on the Chef's Knife, I didn't think it would be possible or practical. I also was thinking of a traditional khukuri handle on the clever, but I tried drawing it and couldn't get it to look right. I wanted a matching pair, which is why they have the same style handle and neither blade is a dui chirra.

Snowwolf: Do you mean one just like mine, or a "full-sized" version?

Some feedback about the drawings:
- Does "Tamang style" include the black finish (like on the most recent Tamang DOTD)?
- Bone handles from HI are typically *not* chiruwa style (I can't recall any that were), but horn and antler is put on chiruwa handles (as an alternative to wood).
- Showing a bunch of X's as the inscription on the blade might result in a bunch of X's there. I'm not sure that's what you want?
- Do you really want a shorter handle for the longer knife? (Just checking.)

Great questions, thanks for asking! In my email to Auntie, I was a little more specific with my requests. I asked to finish both blades with normal mirror finish and Kami markings on both sides. Where the x's are, I asked for a prayer or phrase of some sort, whatever the maker feels appropriate. Having said that, I got a Baby Hasiya that does have x's along the spine, similar to what I drew, and would be perfectly happy if that's what I received. That detail was essentially to make the blade less plain looking when I decided to abandon the dui chirra idea.

As for the handles sizes, the Chef's knife handle came directly from a measurement of my Mini Micro Bowie, which is perfect. For the cleaver, it's a combo of wanting the whole knife to look proportional, and adding some room to adjust the grip depending on the task at hand. That room to slide my hand back is not something I deemed necessary for the Chef's Knife, since it isn't designed for chopping, regardless of grip. I'm also fairly confident that they will be able to take these rough drawings and specs as what they are, which is a concept, not necessarily an exact blueprint. I tried not to include extreme detail because these kamis know how to make darn fine blades, and I want to let them do what they do best :)

About the bone handle: I haven't seen any chiruwa or AK Bowie handles in bone, but that is part of why I wanted it. If bone is not possible, I'm assuming I will be or would have already been notified, and will go from there. I did not plan this project to anything "typical HI," but rather HI-inspired versions of designs that are fairly typical.

I did indeed! The only last minute addition was the small cho on the Cleaver. The original idea in my head did not have one, but when I drew it up and had the sketches sitting together, it was obviously missing.
