popped into a fishing store, and they have japanese waterstones , its around 8, maybe 9 inches, its 1000 grit, for 33 dollars (cdn) now... i plan to use arkansas stones, should i stay with them? or stay with them and get the stone? your opinions are appreciated

Japanese waterstones are great but they're too much trouble for me. They require a bit of maintenence and there are just better options out there IMHO. I prefer to use diamond and ceramic stones myself. The main reason is that they stay flat. Arkansa, Japanese and silicon carbide stones will all have to be flattened on occasion when they get worn out and that just doesn't appeal to me. Plus I get great results on my setup. I use diamond to do fast work (re-grinding an edge or taking out a chip) and then finish on my ceramics which get me to a mirror polish, I don't even strop. The ceramics even seem to cut pretty fast. FYI I use the Spyderco Ceramics and I'm not sure which diamonds but they're not the DMT's.

Good luck,

Rob

Japanese grits are way different than our standards. I think 1000 is as coarse as you can get, and should be very cheap IIRC.

1000 grit Japanese water stones run around $8 USD if I'm not mistaken. As mentioned, the Japanese grit numbers are much different then what we are used to in the USA.

I got a 220/800 grit waterstone from Japan Woodworker.

$8? Man, I need to learn how to shop a little better--I paid a lot more than 8 bucks.
