Just wondering when you grind in the gut hook if it makes a diference what side to grind from or if the edge of the gut hook should be in the center....Right or left handed???

I am not sure what the protocol is, but this one has the hook ground to center.......... Robert

I tried one once and sent a blade whizzing around the shop. Never has the desire to do another one :D. I would guess that if it was ground on one side , that it would want to pull to one side. You would be able to compensate with the angle of the blade though.

Just be careful either way larry. And come see Us !

Robert: What did you fishnish the handle with? Loks very nive. I always get a bit of a cloudy finish on micarta or G10,11. Thanks. John

Guess I cheated. I milled in the slot for the gut gook. I'll probably file in the edge so it won't go flying anywhere. It's a 6" hunter/skinner with a gut hook. Wrought iron guard and I'm thinking cocobolo spacer with antler handle.
I'll post a pick of what I got so far later.

I have always found the best gut hooks to resemble a l_l more than a U and are easier to sharpen for the end user. ON the down side they dont look as clean.

OK...The guard isn't set yet...or the spacer finished but it will be something sort of like this.

In doing a gut hook, I center the edge inside. I drill a hole, cut out what I don't want, then hand file the rest. To finish it, wrap sandpaper around a dowel or the file.

I hate doing gut hooks, but I still do one from time to time.

For a gut hook to be effective it needs to be wide and astraight edge. Big enough to insert your little finger at least. People that do not like gut hooks have not tried one like this. There real value is in spliting the skin quickly with no slips. I call them Zippers.
