Hi, i know, another forced patina thread! Sorry!:D

I have done a search and i know how to force a patina (i think) but i can't find hardly any posts about people doing it to kershaw sandvik steel. I have a new cyclone with the tinyest corrosion marks on one side, and i think a patina will both protect and look great on this knife. I am planning on just soaking some fabric in apple cidar vineager, wrapping the blade for an hour, and seeing how it comes out!

So, any advice for me? Has anyone already done this to a cyclone/blur/etc. with the sandvik steel? Any pics would be appreciated also.

Thanks!

It's generally accepted that you can not patina stainless steel. While technically possible, you need strong chemicals to achieve the desired look.

I am aware of this fact, but sandvik seems to be a bit less stainless than say s30v. This is a new (to me) knife and it has corroded just by sitting in my closet, and that has never happened to any other knife. Thats why i was hoping it would work. Is it just not possible with this steel without dangerous chemicals?

Thanks for the response!

i'm afraid it's not, vinegar will make the knife rust, that's sure, but i doubt it will give it an even patina.

if you can live with the "steel" look of the blade you can pretty much avoid all rusting issues by smoothing the bead blasted finish with a regular chrome polish paste. this as worked for me on my leeks and ram.

if you really want a patina your best bet is ferric chloride, it's not that dangerous but it will stain everything it touches and is VERY harmfull to the environment, wich means that you'll have to keep it in a sealed container and dispose of it properly.

hope this helps.

Hey bro.. I forced a patina on stainless by using Hydrochloric Acid...mix with water (3 parts water-1 part Acid) Use some rubber gloves, let it set in there for 35-45 minutes and you've got it.. Looks great!
It will work.. For sure! Good luck. You can buy it at Lowes or Home Depot.

Hey SuprisedGoat, if you try that post a pic, I have a blur I wouldnt mind trying that on

Ferric Chloride darkens most stainless steels, I think. I know it has worked well on AUS8 and 8Cr13MoV.
