I am going to be purchasing a new BK9 (my first Becker) in a couple of weeks once my bonus comes in....Upon arrival I will be stripping the blade and was wondering whether to force a patina or to send it off to be duracoated?

Please share your opinions and pics of both of these if you have time

Thanks guys!

I am under the impression that when you duracoat that it is pretty much bomb proof...I may be wrong but from everything I've read that is what it seems like to me

Personally, I wouldn't duracoat it, I'd force a patina or let one form naturally with use. The coating you apply will eventually wear off, duracoat or not. But it is your knife, make it your own and have a great time with your Becker. Just my .02¢

Any coating is going to come off sooner or later so don't waste your money duracoating.

Just leave the coating on. Use it. Beat on it. When it starts to get all ugly, you can decide to strip it and patina it. Imo :)

only reason I was considering a forced patina was because I heard it helped with rust prevention....will the blade not rust just being stripped?

ceracoat is more durable than duracoat.
OTOH, painting the blade with krylon then baking at 325 for 45 minutes to hard cure it is a pretty durable hobocoat.

It can, but I have not had any issues and I don't take care of mine at all. I used it to chop a dead branch hanging over a swimming whole and it took a dunk. I wiped it off on the dry part of my shirt and put it away and nothing happened. But I live in a dry area. A more humid area or someplace near saltwater might be different.

I've got one with no coating and one with a very well worn factory look. Never had any rust problems with either but I usually wipe them downbefore I put them away. I'll see about posting pics soon.

This is the only one I have at home. My brother has the other.
