Can patina be forced on steels like 8cr13mov or S30V? I would love to put patina on a folding knife. Thanks for your help!

Will be interested to see other responses. They are designed to resist staining, or rust and corrosion. My guess would be that you would not be able to get a consistent appearance like you can with the high carbon blades.

Yes, you can get a very consistent patina using PCB etchant (ferric chloride). You will need to coat the edge and the pivot area with a 'resistant' such as nail polish beforehand. There are some guides on the Web.

With a bottle of ferric chloride (that can be purchased at radio shack), I easily put an acid etch on my 154cm benchmade 553 for a heavy stone wash.

Soaked for 30 minutes.
