Last week I decided to try out some forced patinas. I did my Mora and an Opinel no.7. I think they came out pretty well for a first try so I wanted to share with you guys. Forgot to oil them for the pics, but the oil really brings out the shapes and color. Tell me what you think?

Ps, some of my pics aren't very good, I'm using a 40 dollar kodak camera haha.:p

Very cool patina dude and nice mirror edge on that mora. What did you use?

This is the only pic i have of mine. Unfortunately, she's leaving me for another guy tomorrow.

Lots of use and forgot to wipe it down sometimes.

I've only done 2 knives as well, and only have photos of one of them.

Here is my BK2. I used regular old yellow mustard, and I think it turned out pretty well :).

Anyone have any suggestions for forcing a patina on a chunk of CPM-M4? Blade in question is a M4 Manix2, it's awaiting some custom scales and when I get the scales I'll be forcing a patina so I can carry it at work.

This is a #10, mostly mustard, and the occasional apple. Where did you get a Coghlans Opinel? Canadian tire (a DIY/box store) used to carry them years ago, does anyone carry them now? is the price comparable to regular Opinels? I know they arent special but I thought if they got them on a big contract they might be cheaper.

Having read an in use review on this forum http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72972&page=1
I'd say blood and tree sap work fairly well at creating a patina. On that basis, most of the usual culprits should do the job.

That mora is nice. Here's a couple I no longer have. The light kind of washed it out a bit but you get the idea. The top one is forced, the bottom one is natural.

Wow, Great job guys! Those are some nice patinas.

I used a 1 x30 grinder all the way up to .25 micron then leather. I did do a bit of cutting with it before the pics so there are some scratches here and there.

As far as where I got the opinel...I don't remember....Sorry! I got it online somewhere and honestly I didnt know there was more than one kind haha.

I really dig that first becker, good stripes. How do you like it? Ive never had one and im thinking of giving one a go.

Are you talking about my BK2 up top?

If so, I like the thing quite a bit. I actually got mine at the same time I got my Mora, and I feel they compliment each other well. The best way I can say it is like this: The BK2 feels like a larger knife stuffed into a smaller blade length. It inspires confidence, even though it is a bit heavy for some people. It batons great, it chops well for something its size, and its small enough that you can do pretty much anything camp related (making traps, tent pegs, food prep, etc) with it. For a 1/4in thick knife, it actually cuts pretty well (high grind), and its handle is pretty comfortable.

Hope that helps out :).

Thanks for the Quick review! It sounds like a good knife but im not sure if id want that or a BK7. Never seen either in person so im on the fence. They both look like a great deal though!

Ps I like the check pattern a lot, its unique.

Thanks for the kind words. They're appreciated :).

Tough call on that one. The BK7 is actually lighter than the BK2, even though it is longer by a full 2 inches. The sheaths are also very different, if that matters to you. Also they say the BK7 is the "all around" blade of the Becker line, because it splits the difference between the 2 and the 9. The BK2 is generally the one that they say that "everyone needs". I can't pretend to tell you which one you'll like better. The good news, is that either way, you'll likely be happy :).

Now... Back on topic :).

Same BK2, but shot with my modded sheath as well.

The BK-9 is a good chopper for a good price, but is ground thin enough to be useful for smaller tasks. Like all Beckers, it's also fun and easy to mod.

Opinel No. 7 w/ patina. Opinel No. 4 w/o patina for comparison.

Took about half an hour cutting grapes. I set the knife on towel with the blade edge facing up. Had a bunch of grapes in a bowl, and I'd cut each in half before eating (did this while watching an half-hour sitcom). This was the result.

This did significantly eat the edge of the knife though. Towards the end of the show, the knife edge wasn't even able to pierce through the grape skin without a little bit of a push. Easily remedied with a few passes over a sharpening steel...

[edit]Updated pics - finished making the patina on that last 1/4" near the tang[/edit]
