Fordom tool purchase ??

I have taken a job that seems to require something like a Fordom tool. I'm polishing brass figures for a local artist. And besides it's a good excuse to buy another tool. A search of archives comes up blank.

What I think I want is a 1/4 HP, variable speed, reversable Fordom tool. The problem is that the $300. + cost makes me wonder if their are better alternatives?

Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks, Lynn

I dont see how anyone can make knives without one. I have the reversable model but naver use reverse. You may if you do polish bronze though. I bought mine set up from ENCO I dont have their cuurent flyer but call them at 1-800-USE-ENCO mine was around 200 bucks

Another place to check is www.woodcraft.com . They have a pretty good selection of kits, handpeices, bits and everything to get you started. The prices seem good to. I wouldn't dwell on the price to much. You can do a lot with a $100 dremel kit, but it won't last as long as the foredom, especially under heavy loads, or long running times like you'll probably be giving it. By the time you buy a dremel kit, and find out that half of the accessories it comes with aren't what you need, then go buy more bits, then replace the dremel in a couple of years, you could have bought 1 foredom tool, and the bits you need, and not have the hassle of looking for a new one in a few years. And above all else the foredom will most likely do the job better ( or at least more easily than a dremel) and faster. And thats important because a job's not worth taking if it takes more time and effort than the payment in the end is worth.

It'll feel better when it stops hurting.
