I've got a pre-1984 Buck 110 with a steel pin (when did they start using those?) that's lost it's snap. Hasn't been altered in any way or abused as far as I can tell.
I've written and called Buck with no response which is not surprising this time of year. I'm wondering if that lack of snap on closing (needs encouragement) is covered in the warranty. Can I just send it in without any kind of authorization? Thanks for your help.

New ones are pretty cheap. But you can send it in. Here is copy of email to me on refurbishing a 110.

We would be happy to refurbish your 110.

If the blade is worn and you would like a new blade plus have the knife cleaned please send $10.

Both of these amounts include the return shipping to you.

If there's no rush, I'd wait until after the holidays and contact them.

They will probably fix it free of charge, but you should talk to them first to make sure.

You can e-mail Joe Houser direct (his contact link is at the bottom of the main index page of this Buck Forum).

Yes, wait until after the holidays. I'm waiting to send in a custom shop order for this reason. I imagine they are very busy now. I sent in a couple of knives for warranty repair on November 9th and should be getting them soon, but I'm not surprised it is taking a few weeks at this time of year.

May be worth it to give it a real good cleaning first. That may have the desired results.

I'm sure they will make it right though if you decide to send it back.

Is there a 'right' way to clean them? This is new for me. Mine doesn't look like it's been through the 'hard' work that some have but I've never taken one apart before. I don't see any 'gunk' in it but that doesn't mean much. Thanks for the help.

I had one with the same problem. Instead of calling them I just sent it to the warranty department with a note explaining the problem and my phone number and address. In about 2 1/2 weeks I got it back looking like new and sharpened ready to go. No charge.

Eagle, Using a pressured oil, spray around the pivot and work the blade and wipe off excess . Using a toothpick clean out noch on back of blade that lock seats in . Do the same in blade well . Wipe clean and work it listening and just "feeling " the knife movement . Then let us know if there is a difference . DM

David,
I followed your directions with excellent results. There was a little bit of 'pocket dust' or something in both ends. When I sprayed some WD-40 in it, that stuff loosened up and...the snap's back. I couldn't hear or 'feel' the stuff when it was dry but your suggestion hit the nail on the head. There's still a little bit in there. I'm going to let it soak awhile and see if I can get more out but it's in good shape now. No repairs necessary thanks to your directions.
Will Brasso suffice to brighten up the bolsters? It's actually a pre-1980 knife according to the info on the sticky above. And almost like brand new now.
Thanks for your help.

Yet another happy ending.

Is this the Christmas season, or what?

:D

BTW, Rem Oil might be a better choice than WD-40. Or at least hit it with some Rem Oil afterwards.
