Forever warranty gone?

I went to my once every 5 years knife show today.
A vendor there had a buck 110 finger-groove with a busted blade for $10.00.
He said it had been his favorite knife for 15 years but could not use it with the blade busted.
I asked him why he didn't send it in to be fixed under the warranty? He said he heard that Buck was no longer honoring that warranty. I said I thought they still were and he grabbed it out of my hand and put it in his pocket :)
Isn't the forever warranty still forever?

If its a defect in the knife then yes. I sent one in earlier this year and they replace the spring and cleaned it up. But if the blade itself is broken (which is do to abuse) they'll put a new blade on it for $10

hum ten bucks for a new blade does not sound like a bad price...
can you get a super steel for that price?

Buck no longer offers upgrades for blade replacements. You're gonna git a 420HC blade if you send it in.

I'm sorry your upset by this policy and believe me, if it was something that made a lot of sense, we would still be offering this service.
Several years back we experimented with this. If a customer sent in their 110 or 560, we would upgrade the blade steel for a price. There were so many issues that came up, that we finally had to scrap the idea. It did not work well and only made customers upset. We have been making the 110 for so many years, and there have been so many variations over the years, we just encountered too many problems. It was a myriad of little things that simply could not be overcome. We would end up sending knives back and forth across the country and to Canada. It was a headache for both us and especially for our customers.
Sorry we cant help you with that but I hope my explanation at least helps a little.

I'd ask about paying for an upgrade. but ten bucks still sounds good to me.

I'll put Buck customer service up there with any other vendor with the possible exception of LL Bean. Having read of the abuse some people subject their knives to, I have no problem with Buck setting some reasonable guidelines. Been a couple of years, but I bought a 112 at a gunshow for $10. It had been sharpened on a grinder of some sort, but the blade wasn't damaged. When I got it home, I discovered that the lock didn't hold. Sent it to Buck on my nickle offering to pay for resharpening and the lock fixed. They reconditioned/sharpened the knife, fixed the lock, and sent it back to me no charge.

Just a bit disappointing to me. Kinda like if Zippo decided not to fix my lighter for free any longer.
Looks like they have changed their warranty from forever to maybe.

My favorite Buck Knife story is about the farmer who dropped his knife off the back directly into the hay baler. That is supposedly the first time they denied coverage, and it was because all the farmer sent in was one piece of one bolster. But if he allowed Buck to use his story and his piece of a bolster they would send him a new knife, free of charge.

If Benchmade or SOG were to offer a new blade for $10 I would be impressed. Buck changing their forever policy creates the opposite feeling in me.

I think I was one of the early life members in the Buck Collector club. Then, as membership grew over the years, they decided they could no longer offer a club newsletter, but if I wanted they would email the content of the newsletter. They stopped sending the newsletters but have never sent the email one either.

I still believe Buck makes great knives.

I will replace or fix every knife I have ever made free of charge as long as I can walk. Either your word is good or it isn't.

I have only been in the Buck Collector Club (BCCI) for 2 years, but I get the Newsletters in the mail like clockwork. I can also download them on line.

Win,

I am also a BCCI lifer. They sent out something that had you choose to get the news letter via email. I don't want an Ecopy as that is already posted on the BCCI web site. I still get a printed copy 4 times a year. You need to contact the club ASAP and get that news letter issue of your's fixed pronto! They can't fix it if you don't let them know.

Speaking from my experience the one time I sent in 2 knives for repair..... very recently......

One was a 40 year old 1970's 501with the frame cracked at the lockbar pivot.
They deemed it unrepairable, but they sent out a brand new one :)

The other was a 1993 Vanguard 192 with a loose pommel.
They took care of the pommel, and cleaned/sharpened/buffed her up.
It came back looking brand new!

Personally I think their warranty is still as good as it ever was.

Other than super blatant user error, they seem to take the warranty very seriously :)

It's a forever warranty ,not a whatever warranty,if you abuse your knife and damage it,it's your fault not bucks.the terms of the warranty are very clearly spelled out.

Have you ever had Buck refuse to repair a knife you've sent in to them?

There have been many here, myself included, who have had service from Buck that went WAY above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect...

Unless it has been written that they no longer offer their Forever Warranty, I doubt anything has changed.
I can understand any knife company not covering abuse though. There is no reason they should absorb the costs of repair, when the damage was caused by the stupidity of the owner.

If a person uses a folder like the 110 for a screwdriver, pry bar, or tries to beat it through a piece of firewood, they can expect damage to occur.
It isn't Bucks fault some people don't know how to properly use a tool, or use the correct tool for a given task...

Dave, I don't know what your confusion is but they have not changed their warranty.
How on earth would you expect them to warranty a knife dropped into a hay bailer? While it surely was not intentional it was still abuse, not a manufacturer defect.
Warranties are to cover manufacturer defects!

However, I too as others have mentioned, have seen Buck go above and beyond their warranty, for one to Expect them too though is wrong.

By the way I also get the newsletter mailed to me from the club. Which is seperate from Buck.

Just sat and read Buck's warranty on the website, and I see nothing that has changed from all the years I've been buying Bucks.

The "Forever Warranty" has always been for "defective due to materials or workmanship", not abuse or rust.

Your vendor is a chucklehead.............

Buy a ESEE folder or fixed blade if you want a whatever warranty. They'll even replace it if you cut it in half with a saw. :)
