Hello All,

Sorry for the extended absence. I was finishing up a Ph.D.--writing 300 pages can really get in the way of knifemaking:).

Anyway, I am now comfortably settled back in Northern CA (Chico) and ready to get started again. First I want to build a couple of forges--one propane and one wood/charcoal. For the latter, I will look to Tai Goo and Tim Lively. For the propane, I wanted to ask all of you.

Indian George has a couple nice ones--I.G., can you give me a list of parts and instructions? Anyone else have recommendations?

Thanks,

John

John; The blowers are from Surplus Center # 16-1032 @ $18.99. I like them because on the dual blowers the small one attach a hose to it and it blows cool air in front of the forge.

i still need a thread adapter for my forge/salt bath project (its been on hold for quite a while now)

needs to go from 1/8'' pipe thread to the thread from an Acetylene regulator. (end that goes to the torch)

anyone know where i can order one?

or maybe just order a high pressure propane regulator? and the adapter to go to the 1/8'' pipe thread?

Hey John - good to see you back. Will they let you burn coal in CA without a special referrendum? ...just kidding.

I picked up an old "buffalo" forge with a hand crank blower in trade for a knife - that will be my coal set -up. IG' s burner rig is one of the best I have seen. If you are in California, there are a lot of potters there doing a type of firing called "raku". Anyway, these people specialize in handmade burners and lining steel cylinders with refractory material. They get quickly up to high temps - if you do a web search for Raku, you will probably find most of the resources for this are in CA.

Take it easy, Bob

Hey IG,

That looks to be an air pressure regulator. Works OK for propane?

That'd be great if it does.

Steve

Bob,

I have to have a license out here just to say the word "knife" :).

George,

Do you use any sealant (goop or teflon tape) on the threads, or just screw them together?

Thanks again,

John

John, I put it on just the gas lines, I do not put it on the cap on the 1/4 npt that goes in the burner.
Steve: I would, but I am a risk taker.

Hey John,

Its great to see ya back on the boards. I was looking for you at the Bladeshow this year.

Hopefully your new place is permanent such that you can invest time and money in your work shop. Sue and I would love to come out there for some R&R...and wine! She has always wanted to drive the Pacific coast with frequent stops at bed and breakfast's along the way.

For the gas forge: Ron Claiborne might be a good resource. He is building and selling them. Also, at the Batson Bladesmith symposium last spring, I sat across from Don Fogg one morning at breakfast and listened to him talk about gas forges in a highly technical sense...in regards to volume, combustion theory, atmosphere, heat transfer, ..controls with thermo-couples, burners...etc. He has a wealth of knowledge and a good resource. Maybe start at his web site: http://www.dfoggknives.com/forge.htm He has a very nice do-it-yourself page with great photos and comments.

Here is a burner web site: http://www.hybridburners.com/

That all for now....I hope it helps.

Take care,
Rob
