Forge burner issue

I would like some help troubleshooting an issue with getting my forge safely lit. I'm trying to get started in knifemaking and have learned a ton from this forum so far. I just got a small forge and the first time lighting it a fire started outside the forge up at the burner gas inlet about 15-30 seconds after lighting the forge itself. I was using a fairly low flow rate, was it maybe too low to keep combustion from "climbing" the burner tube? The burner is set up as it was received. Any advice would be much appreciated, I'm not a fan of burning gas where it's not supposed to be.

What kind of burner do you have? Venturi style (naturally aspirated) or blown?

I'd suspect too low flow rate - those venturi burner types do need a bit of gas flow.

You need at least 10PSI to get a venturi to draw air properly. Raise the pressure and flow rate. Once the forge is fully heated you may cut it back a bit, but a venturi doesn't run well at low flow rates. If you hear loud hissing, squealing, or "hic-ups" raise the pressure. IIRC, I used to set my venturi burners at 15PSI.

Also, you need to tune the burner to get the draw right. Follow the manufacturer's directions to adjust the collar and how far to stuck the burner into the forge. Do the fine tuning after the forge has been running 10-15 minutes on high flow rate.

Thanks all. I was thinking that was probably the issue but good to have reassurance before adding more fuel to the fire so to speak
