Well I've been carrying my Panuti for almost two months now,not oiling it just keeping it dry and and wiping off any sap I may get on it-no rust on the black finish at all.

The polished part of the blade has some marks from sap but the black is just the same as the day I yanked it out of the box.

Seems tough

Anybody else want to chime in? I'm thinking for a use knife the black finish is better overall, while the polish is good for a looker/lite use.

I don't have any khuks with it but have a few knives w/it. I agree based on that. I've never cared for the high polish on khuks anyway.

Thanks for the update.

Only time and use will tell how it stands up but it seems it has had a good start.

I think that we will be seeing more blades with this finish, even Khukuri's as a recent offering shows.

I intend to keep tossing updates out every couple or so months,my two cents is for a villiager type knife it's best since it seems a good bit tougher then even a "matt" finish.

Also the brass on my Panuti is getting that nice flat, dull, used brass look so it's a very practical beast.

I'm going to have some chopping to do here shortly with all that's going on at my end, having a good knife to do this is nice :p

It's really not a "finish" per se. meaning it's not something put on after the kukri is done. It's just the high temperature scale from the forging process. It should keep the blade from rusting, since it's carbonized metal, already bonded to carbon, relatively inert to oxygen reactions (rusting).

Probably why they're left that way for real users, easier to keep well maintained.

No question the forge scale is a tough finish. The HI ang khola has been used heavily since I got it a couple of months ago, and shows very little wear. I've used the old non-HI village kukri a lot over the last ten years, and it obviously worked well for its previous owner(s) for several decades before that.

To be honest I wondered if it was more a cost reduction measure rather than for blade protection.

Seems it is a good hard use blade finish, an additional choice in finishes for prospective purchases to have at their command.

I noticed that a Sgt. Khadka Khuk with this finish was recently sold in a DOTD, which I think was the first time one of his Khuk's thus finished had come up for sale?

It is.

Like I said before, it isn't a "finish" per se, it's how it looks after forging. For the "true villager" (which is what the ones with this finish are generally referred to as), it's forged, handles put on, sharpened, and off to work it goes. It takes far less effort than a standard offering because it doesn't have to have the scale removed, and then be buffed.

Right,I just keep calling it a finish since it's what it's termed,it could be called "unfinished" in some ways-but it is a tougher using offering then say a matt or polished job.

Whatever you call it I like it best over any other type, thing just begs to be brought out and chop
