Very interesting site in its entirity.
hamon polishing steel & more
And here's one of the several things that relate to our discussions here:

http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/flaws.html
[with pix]
"open layer (kitae-ware, in Japanese)
This kind of flaw is the easiest to be found.
It is not good for its visibility. But in most cases, it is not so serious as it looks like.
It is only a trouble for eyes.
A small flaw from fold welding work does not make the quality of the steel down.
No kitae-ware does not mean good steel.
We have to see the colour and brightness of the steel (in other words, the condition of the steel particles) to know its quality. "

Wish I had a few thousand to toss on one of their "very low price beginner" type blades...

Tom Linton has a beauty that he let us handle at the MWKK. Heck, he even let us swing it at a hanging rope! What a great guy...

btw, the rope went *snick* even for those of us with no technique

Yeah, that's a really cool website. I bookmarked it and hopefully it won't get lost in the shuffle. I wouldn't mind having some of the "free stuff" they gave away for shipping and handling. ;)

Very cool...especially the last pic showing the sword with the "modification" by the enemy's blade. Anyone who collects historic firearms ought to be familiar with little oddities like this...except that our collections aren't quite as old. :)

There's nothing I loved more than aquiring an old rifle with the user's name or initials engraved somewhere hidden on the stock. Nothing I loved more, that is, than locating the original soldier it'd been issued to, but I never had any luck with that. I always enjoyed hearing stories from those who had.

Great site. I'll be spending some time there in the near future.

Old Japanese Swords are not as expensive as many think. Check out my site in the under $3k section (shameless plug). Of course, the less expensive blades have some of the flaws shown on that site :)
