Hi All,

For a while now I've been collecting submissions for the Forge Gallery pages I've been wanting to create, well, I've finally taken some time and uploaded what I've been sent so far to the following url:

http://ForgeGallery.EllisCustomKnifeworks.com/

The idea I have is to collect as many pictures and construction details as possible to make a resource for forge building ideas. It'd be great if more people would take the time to photograph their forges and write a little something about the details of their particular forge and send it along to me! :) This will hopefully become a resource for ideas for people wanting to build forges!

:)

BTW, thanks for taking the time to document that process, I know it will be useful for new guys to building forges for sure.

:)

I'll be happy to document it fully, Darren. You outta know by now that's my kinda thing....:D :p

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback, and thanks to those that sent me some more forges to put on the site, I'll be updating soon....leaving for vacation in a few days and it'll probably get done when I get back. :)

Dan, we'll be getting one of yours on it's way soon, maybe this week...and the other will get done after I get back from vacation (Steel's already on order).....you're going to be cooking with gas soon! :)

C   L, Darren!

Shoot me an email with your address - got stuff to send ya. ;)

Thanks!

Very nice Darren, very nice.

For me it shows that there isn't a lot of magic in making a forge and even the common man should give it a try. (I still get the biggest kick out the of tool box model.)

I couldn't agree more! That's my main motivation for wanting to put those pages up and build them into a good working resource. I figure it won't hurt my forge building business either, since there are always people out there who would rather just get right to work and not have to fuss with building equipment.

edited to add: One thing people should think carefully about when building their own is their burner size...don't build a forge chamber bigger than your burner can handle! This is particularly important for the naturally aspirated burners...I'll have pics and info on Gib's forge soon on the site and the story of his forge evolution illustrates this point well! Also, many don't think about this, but for the forced air burners, a nice thing to add is a normally closed solenoid valve in-line with the gas input that is wired in parallel with the blower. Then, if power goes off the gas goes off automatically...otherwise, you just have to be really careful not to leave your forge unattended at any time. Unfortunately, the NC solenoid valves run about $50 for the ones rated for fuel gas...

I like Sweany's toolbox forge too! That's just too cool, Sweany's da man! :)

Hello everyone, I'm fairly new to this site and forging itself but i'm absolutely in love with this already. I cannot bring your site up, when I click the url it opens a new window and takes me to a search engine called: about blank. What am I doing wrong? I made a break drum forge from a design somewhere on the net and have completely given up on reaching welding heat with it, whether it be the coal or more than likely probably me not knowing a whole lot. The guy that i bought the coal from said that it was from the pocahontas seam and that is capable of reaching welding heat. I can get a nice orange color from it but that's it. I've been doing alot of research, mostly here and it seems that a gas forge is the way to go for welding heat, for the beginner, or am I wrong? anyhow, I would love to see the designs on that site but can't get the page up. This is an awesome site, i've never seen so much beautiful damascus! and a wealth of information!

ROB: Try again. If you can't get it may be awhile for Darren to get back to you he is going on vacation for a week. If I can help you email me I also build forges.

I'm still planning on sending you pictures and details on my forge Darren, I wasn't tellin you a lie! :D
Took a second job this summer and haven't seen the forge in about 4 weeks :( Should get weekends off now that most of the hay and straw is baled though.
The website looks great so far!

Hi Rob,

Sorry for the delay in responding, as I'G. mentioned, I've been on vacation... :)

I'm not sure why you couldn't access the page, can you reach it now? There are some problems with the pages in that some people see the text overlapping the images but that only occurs with about 5% of the people viewing the pages....it has to do with the web editor I'm using...I'm going to be changing that in the near future when I can afford to buy a better software package, but you should be able to access the pages as they are now....

In regards to gas forges, you should be able to reach welding heats in a coal forge without problem! In fact, whenever I use a coal forge I have to be careful I don't overheat the steel, it's easy to do in most coal forges! :) IMHO, gas forges are the way to go, but I'm biased since I sell them. They're easy to fire up for a quick forging session, relatively inexpensive to operate, and are clean to use. Having said that, coal forges have been around for a lot longer and lots of people love using them! :)

OK OK Now I have to get off my ARSE and take a pic of the new forge I am building. Very simple but should kick butt when done for a Damascus forge:D

Kick butt forge pics
Might consider moving the pics down a little so we can read all of the text...otherwise it is Kick Arse

Darren, I've uploaded my pics of the lining process to the same place as before. Let me know when you've got them. :)
