what can i do to fix my forge. I bought it from darren ellis and it works fine right up until i forge damascus. i am on my third liner in two months is there another liner other than satanite out there that works better? i use two inch kaowool and then this last time i had four coats of satanite and it still melted the floor out any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

I dont know,,,But I need to know too!

Tonight as a matter of fact, I have my 3-burner forge sitting here with the same little problem due to the flux digging down into the kaowool ...

I remember someone once said something about "kitty litter"?

But Im not sure now what was said,,,only that Kitty litter would fix the problem...

Im not sure I can use any kitty litter because my Lowboy forge is very tight inside there now already,,,,and I think the Kitty litter goes under the Kaowool liner?......I think?

Couldn't tell if you knew this or not, but the flux is eating out the kaowool as it spills. I believe that lightweight ceramic brick on the floor of your forge, or over the material that is in direct range of the flux, will solve your problem. Google searches always help- but basically, the ceramic just keeps the flux of of kaowool, or other such insulation- things that work like the brick will probably work too. Check before trying though.

Castable refractory is much tougher for a floor but I like to just sit a piece of stainless steel sheet metal on the floor of my horizontal forge. It can be formed so the flux runs out of the door. I use cheap kitty litter for the vertical forge floor

Bruce.....I think I might try that sheet of steel idea of yours ....I dont have much room in the forge for any other ideas, and a thin sheet, with a fold or bend to run the flux out the side door would be a great easy answer!

Line the floor with a fire brick and put some cheap clay kitty litter on the bricks. As the clay heats up it will glaze. You can scrape it out when needed. But..... on the other hand a vert. forge is better for welding; so Ive been told.

I use a few different things. I have used a soft fire brich which i scrape the top edge out to make a dish to catch the flux undert heat I use the cheap cat litter to catch the spillage. Use the cheap non branded as it has no aditives. the expensive cat ittter has aditives to stop the smell of cat id does nothing for your forge.

Clean the whole lot out after every session or when you see it is spilling close to your linning.

I have used stainless steel sheet but it must have ben a cheap alloy it was turned into a material that I could crush like cracker biscut.

Never us the ko wool without some kind of paint on finish the loose fibers are ecelent heat risistance but not at all resistant to the corosive effect of flux.

I buy various products from pottery supply shops. One product was called thermo coat 300 another is rtz which is the initials for the minerals that form the coating.

Don't loose hart the insulating wool can easily be replaced. I have a bag of off cuts from when i re lined my forge If I see a little hole I get the flux slag out and push some coating in and paint over. It works well. The inside of something that hot is not going to look brand new unless you take particular care of what you are doing. I loan my forge to students and they knock holes in the linning all the time. I hardly ever put a hole in the lining anymore.

I have never tried a vertical .
Think of the fibre when working on repairs. Asbestosus caught people off guard. I don't know if the fibres are dangerous but i would expect that they are. a good dust mask is good insurance.
