I'm new to the whole forge/Knife building thing. I have several questions about forges and wish for someone to enlighten me.... :) First of all I have accuired a peice of .25" thick 8" I.D. pipe that is 36" long; What is a good length for a forge? Secondly if I line it 2" thick inswool that would leave me with a 4" chamber. Is that plenty of room? Third does Satanite Refractory Mortar work well when coated with Itc-100? :D :D

I think the pipe might be a bit long unless your're making some long blades. You'd use a lot of gas heating that baby up. Two inches of unsulation might be overkill; mine has 1" coated with satanite and it works real well.

That sounds just right. One thing I didn't mention, you might find the longer length good for an upright forge. But I don't know anything about building one of those. Someone with some experience is going to have to chime in here. :)

Thanks for the input. another question... If I go with 6" I.D.X 12" horizontal would one burner be enough?

I had a problem with the chamber being too big( 10" pipe).... Added another inch of durablanket with plistix refractory cemenet and shortened it from 18" to 12". It's at welding heats with only 6lbs. pressure. I did 3 blades on Friday night and messed around with some cable damascus too.

Talk to Larry Zoeller about building or buying one of his burners. They are very efficient!

Thanks to all the BF members for their input.

How important is it to have a regulator? Keep in mind I know nothing about a gas forge.

This represents a forge volume of about 151 cubic inches. A single burner of the correct size should be adequate. Just don't make the burner too big or you will have trouble at the low end of the temperature range. The choice of regulator can also dictate how hot your forge will get, be sure your regulator puts out enough pressure for a naturally aspirated burner if you want to get to forge welding temperatures....however, this really applies to larger forges more, with a small 6" forge (4' x 12" forge chamber) as you're asking about, a simple 0-17 psi regulator will do fine.
