If I make a drip plate to fit in my forge out of stainlees steel to catch flux drippings during forge welding will it affect the atmosphere in my forge and make it difficult to weld?

I have been doing that for quite some time with no ill effect. To be honest, I never even thought about it til you posted the question.

I don't think it should cause a problem. Why not just go with a chunk of mild steel it would be cheaper.
The only thing I have seen adversly effect a forge enviroment was remains from a brass and copper mokume billet that melted down. It created a greenish exauast flame from the forge and the edges of the damascus billet would not weld.

Darrel, that's the beauty of those vertical Don Fogg style forges. I intend to build one soon, but I doubt I can wait that long to try making damascus and want to protect my propane tank mini-forge. This little forge has only whetted my appetite for a full scale serious forge!
