Does anyone here have any experience they want to lend in forge welding a high alloy steel, like Zapp Z Wear to stainless cladding... for a 3-layer lamination (san mai)

Would appreciate your experience and any guidelines or areas of concern.

My experience is limited to simple carbon steel forge welding

thanks
Harbeer

No experience, but I would guess you have to Tig the entire perimeter. A big rolling mill would also help. Talk to Aldo about his welding of stainless clad. They use a rolling mill, IIRC.

I've tried it once and it split apart as it cooled from forging heat. Part of the problem was using a cladding that air hardened along with the core. If I were to do it again, and I intend to when I get some more time, I would use a stainless that wouldn't harden, or wouldn't harden much. I also planned on having my kiln set at 1200F and going right into it for a sub-critical anneal before it cooled down too far from the welding and forging.

I have done a few test runs and welded up a triple stack to see that stuck. It was D2, 316ss and W2. Let me see if I can find a picture of it. I wrapped the entire stack in stainless heat treat foil and pressed it. I had planned on moving ahead with some D2 stainless San-Mia (can we use that word again?). Funny thing is the D2 welded at a lower temp then simple carbon steels.

so I'm guessing you tried with a 400 series and you want to move to a 300 series cladding?

Why would you have ever stopped using the term san mai? If you ever get a letter from the fat man, just respond with my dad's old form letter for such occasions.
Dear Sir,
F*** you!
Strong letter to follow,.
sincerly,
