I am looking to buy a gas forge soon. I've noticed that the NC Knifemaker advertises a max temp of 2350, where the Mankel Knifemaker states 2700. I have never done any forge welding, but will evolve to that in time. Is 2350 all I need? Is the extra 350 degrees worth the extra money for any reason? Thanks.

Well, I've got an NC Knifemaker and the first time I tried to forge a knife, I let the steel get WAAAAY too hot and it sort of dribbled to the ground when I removed it. Should be hot enough for welding. But then, I've never welded anything so I'd wait for advice from someone more experienced.

I have the NC Knifemaker and I use it to weld Damascus.

It works fine....but do a search here in this forum about protecting the inside of the forge from flux.

Witt, I see you are with the 10th mountain div. I've heard of problems with gas forges at high altitudes. below 3500 ft there is generaly no problem, but above that problems can occure, and the higher you go, the worse it gets. depending on your planned altitude, check out the model at the altitude of use......Eric

Thanks for the advice. Looks like it's going to be the NC knifemaker or NC whisper lowboy. If they ever let me go home! The hardest part of being deployed is not making knives!!!
