I'm searching for knife makers who forges their blade, preferably with quench lines or temper lines, any recommendations? My budget is around USD$300, 4-6 inch blades, full tang, non-stag handles, I prefer wood or polished micarta handles. any ideas? Thank you in advance!

Hi Eric,

Check out Bruce Evans and Matt Lamey, two forumites who do forge blades. No temper lines visible though... I reviewed Evans' fighting bowie in Reviews forum and Penguin did a review of Lamey's Sunrise Fighter.

Steve Corkum does Japanese style knives, with tempered lines, in the price range you quoted. Handles are cordwrapped Japanese style however. His knives are available and on display at www.knifeart.com. Les Robertson may have Corkum's also.

Too many makers to name. Plain tool steel forged knives with temper lines are Very Cool. In fact, that describes much of my 'collection'. Have a look:

Tim Morgan made several of my knives. Steel includes 5160, W1, 1075, and file steel. All have outstanding differential temper lines. Their price was Well within your budget. On some knives Tim uses Japanese clay tempering. Sadly, I no longer have contact information for him. Family difficulties have forced him to move and to make many less knives than he used to.

But there are many other makers who can make a great knife for you in your price range. Check out James Luman at: www.bladegallery.com

Also look at:

Good luck in your search! That's a big part of the fun. The Quest for the Perfect Knife is never over. And always interesting.

I Really appreciate the help!.....makes the USD$25 i paid worth while and more......

A seconder here for Wally Hayes. Great maker;great guy. But be sure to tell him exactly what you expect, temper lines and all. No question he can do it for you;the question is can he do it at your price point given his backlog of work. Email him or telephone. He's great www.hayesknives.com

Hey Paracelsus
Beautiful collection. Snatched a couple of those images for my picture collection.

I'll second the beknives suggestion. Not only a great knife but a great guy with a reasonable price and short wait time. Check out images of my latest aquisitionat my home page. A five inch forged.

If you got the time, you might want to go to the American Bladesmith Society URL and look at the site of the members links. Most all of them can put a temper line on the steel if you want. You could also see the different styles of knives being made and maybe get something like you want. This site has a lot of knifemakers that may not belong to the ABS but can do produce what you may need. They are listed on the link button on the side. I find that looking is as much a part of the knife buying as the purchase.

When you pick out a few styles or makers, then you can ask about their quality and make your decision
