I have been using the fixed blade forum for years and never spent much time here but thought it would be a good place to show off and get opinions on a small camp axe I have been making for the past few months.
There are several things that I wanted for my own use and have built into this axe:
Easy to carry in a day pack at just under 2 pounds
A hardened edge at about 59 Rc with the body slightly softer to use the peen as a hammer. This gives me an axe that will hold an edge the same as my knife.
A hatchet shaped handle that fits my hand better that the rounder, tomahawk type.
A thin edge because I would only be cutting small wood and splitting kindling.
I forged three of these for use by my sons and myself on a hunting trip this fall. We intentionally used them hard on branches, small trees and to disjoint bones while butchering. Good results. I have started getting feed back from customers with positive comments.
Thanks for looking.
