Having seen an engraved Damascus Persian I'd made for a BladeForums member, a client asked if I could do a similar blade with a unique handle.

We traded photos of antique Persians, and one with a "Wheel" butt caught our eyes.

I felt that a forged "ladder-wheel" would re-create an ancient design in a contemporary manner, and be a fun forging exercise.

The client suggested an extended guard with concave pocket for the Pre-Ban Bark ivory we'd decided to use, and requested a one-piece forged and twisted frame.

After several drawings, I began the Damascus forging a few weeks ago, and finished up the knife in time to send it to Paul Long last week for his choice of sheaths.

Paul created a "Black on Black" pouch sheath with Alligator inlay. (note how the inlay mirrors the Persian blade shape)

Here's some photos:

9 1/2 inch, 4-bar Turkish Twist Persian Blade, 8-bar TT Damascus guard, TT Damascus one-piece frame, "Forged wheel" Damascus bolsters, Pre-Ban Bark ivory scales, and Sterling Silver domed and faceted pins.

I'll be delivering this one at Blade. Drop by Table 3Q for a look.

Wow! That's a stunning piece.

Gorgeous work John, and congrats to the collector!

Oh Wow!! Exquisite creation! Phenominal damascus blade with the pattern flowing with the profile, fabulous design features throughout!

The knife and sheath are excellent

John it has to be a tie between this and the Cape Buffalo Dagger as my all time favorite from you. Although you have as many hits as the Beatles these days. :)

Paul wonderful pouch sheath and it fits this knife perfectly

Truly jealous .....to masters at there peak

That's an outstanding piece of work. Sleek, elegant, and unique. I really like the way you mated the ivory to the guard.
The sheath suits it perfectly as well. Well done gentlemen.

Gotta love the curves, the soft edges everywhere, the Persian aspect, hell, the whole damn thing. If it weren't for my lack of love for damascus as a material, I'd be drooling all over my keyboard. This piece is a real thing of beauty! I may even start drooling anyway.

Seeing this piece almost makes me re-think my feelings about damascus, it's that gorgeous. And the leather is a superbly matched piece of the whole package.

John that is one beautiful piece of work. Love the Pin Wheel and well what can you say about a Persian twist blade like that other than, perfect. Paul sheath just puts the icing on the cake

Another stunner John...I love everything about that puppy! I hope you won't completely disown me if I try to pull one of these off sometime in the near future:D Outstanding sheath by Paul as well, this whole package just pops!

Stunning, spectacular.

The pattern on the "wheel" works really well! Beatiful ivory, as well.

Kind regards,

Jos
