Forgetting Your Knife...While You're Carrying It...

Okay, so I was really embarrassed at Home Depot today. I went to pick up some PVC pipe to build a lightbox, and when I went to pick up the pipes from the rack, one end was still secured with a zip tie. An employee saw me and immediately asked if I needed him to cut it. Since I carry my Colonial jackknife at work through the week, I patted my left pocket to find it--and it wasn't there! I went ahead and said yes, thinking to myself how stupid it was to have forgotten my knife. After he cut the tie and I picked up the pipe and turned to move on, the pipe hit the clip on my pocket sheath for my JK Neckmuk--my off-work EDC--reminding me that I had it clipped to my OTHER pocket. I'm only 22 years old, I don't have any excuse for that. Anybody else do things like this, or am I just that absent minded? :o

I cant say ive done this before, but I was at Lowes today getting PVC myself to build a Light frame and Light box... Ive looked over that $75 no frills studio/lightbox thread so many times now....

I sometimes forget, mostly because my work knife (Spyderco Tenacious) transfers between clipped IWB on my hip, or clipped to my pocket.

Most of the time it's IWB, but when I'm in the process of using it, and know I'm going to use it again in a second, I'll clip it in the pocket for better access. Sometimes it stays clipped there quite a bit later, and I'll pat my hip and think I left it somewhere...

never switch up sides, though.

I'm with JCummings. Here on the farm I need a knife on each side, because often I get ahold of something you can't (or shouldn't) let go with one hand. I need to be able to open, use, and replace my knife with the other hand. With gloves on.

I've done it before... sorta... I carry my small fixed blades in my rear pockets, and have forgotten it was there before.. these days though I carry a folder and a small fixed... so no issues with that anymore..

I'm like a walking cutlery store so even if one gets misplaced I just reach for a different one. Heck, there is a pretty good chance I have a knife if I'm walking around in my underwear.

On a side note you don't get much more concealed carry than a knife clipped to your underwear IWB. You could probably get through a pat down with one carried like that. Although I don't plan on getting a pat down some places like theme parks like to look for knife clips.

the only time i forget is if it is a very small knife, ie spyderco honeybee. but i too am a walking cutlery store ;) i dont have to worry about not having one.

I had forgotten my Buck 110 was still in it's belt pouch when I entered Havana International Airport. Luckily the security guys were very helpful reminding me.

There have been a couple of times I've gotten to work and realized I forgot to transfer my knife from one set of pants to the next. Even though I have my Leatherman wave on my belt and a tiny folder in left pocket. I prefer my EDC kilowatt, and feel naked without it. Since then I keep at least three back up knives at work.:D

I guess I didn't really answer the question correctly. No, I don't believe Ive had a knife on me and forgot that I had It.

It's happened to me...no funny stories but I have had times where I will try and wrestle something open to remember halfway through that I have a knife in my pocket.

When I carry my Buck 110 I tend to forget it's on my belt. I guess having a folder on my belt doesn't register......or maybe I have alzheimers.....whats going on?????

Since I always carry at least 2 knives I've never had this problem.

 +1

Me too. At times, I've even had three on me. The largest clipped to right front pocket, a stockman or soddie in my watch-pocket and, occasionally, another small/medium folder in my back right pocket.

i have done the same. recently i switched from belt carry to pocket carry when I bought a new knife. a friend noticed the clip on my pocket and asked to borrow it, i reached for it my belt and forgot i switched telling him i did not have one on me...i'm 20

I haven't done that with a knife... but a while back I was stomping through my house looking for my keys. I spent a solid 2 or 3 minutes looking before I finally found them.

In my hand.

I carry different plain edge knives depending on how I feel, but I have carried a spyderco dragonfly, serrated for rough/dirty jobs, in a kydex mini-fob on my keychain but I never seem to remember it when the time comes.
I just end up using the knife clipped to my pocket.
So, after 3 years, it has been used once or twice.

Because I typically carry only one knife at a time , more often I have the situation that I forget a knife and feel very weird and "naked" without one. I should really have an extra one in my work bag so that I never have this happen.
