forging out in da wilderness

I wonder if I can use regular wood for forging. Its near a railroad so I think I can find a piece of rail for anvil.

Does anyone know what kind of steel is used in railroads?

How can I make an efficient forge?
What does a bladesmith hammer look like?
I need info on how much to heat treat the steel and should I quench it straight into a bucket of water afterwards?
Really I want to know the whole story..
