Forging practice...

You might be a little optimistic as to how much time you are going to have on your hands, dad. ;)

I sure like the looks of that RR rail. A bunch of neat stuff there.
Yeah, they are re-laying a bunch of railroad track between Marathon and Alpine, TX there are PILES of track, spikes and clips all along this stretch of road. Pretty tempting, 'specialty since they've been out there for months.

Still... It's illegal to take that stuff. Even though it seems abandoned. It's not. It's on RR property and the occasionally prosecute people for taking that kinda stuff.

Not really worth it, specially when most of it makes rotten knives!

RR track probably makes a wicked hammer though.

It just clicked for me, that pile is still on RR property - I can see the RR cars in the background. I just looked at pile of parts and thought it was in your yard. I agree, a person can drool :)

Railroad material is federally specified and regulated.

The rail, plates and clips are 1075-1080

I have a US fed gov pdf on it somewhere.

What if I forge them into lawnmower blades, then spray paint them green?
They've got to be twice as good then, right?

The John Deere henchmen would probably pay you a cease-and-desist visit.

Someone told me the bent looking clamp parts are usually made of w1 (I dont hold any stock to what he said, that's just what they told me). He also picked up a little bucket full of those, and railroad spikes that is too heavy for someone to lift by themselves.

I told them, they just arent going to get a good knife out of a railroad spike. He didn't believe me. I have no idea about the clamp things though.
