Is there any way of getting the scale off of a blade before grinding? Or at least limit the amount of scale?

Thanks
Tony

I often make damascus billets and then stock removal them. Forging to shape often gives a better pattern but that is another issue.

I have a wire brush with a metal scrapper on the back. before putting into the annealing box I get most of the scale off with the metal scrapper first and the wire brush. Re heat if I can't get it done real quick and then anneal.

I also have a wire wheel on my drinder. For larger thich scale sometimes I give it a light tap with a small hamer to loosen it up.

A combination of all of the above. Remember safety even when knocking of with the hammer I keep my glasses on (now). I had a bit of scale fly up into my eye only once before I learnt.

The vinegar trick works great. Fresh vinegar, a stiff brush, and then silvery billets!

The last four blades I forged I soaked in vinegar for two days...the scale just wiped off with a rag...I had heard of people doing this, but hadn't tried it, I'm now a believer! :D

Great:D That's a big help.I don't think I got a good annealing job on the first coulple I did, that could have been part of the problem too.
Hey Reg thanks for those mill pics you sent almost got the thing done, just got to put it together.

Thanks a bunch

Tony happy to be of some help.

I have collected the number one proto type built buy mostly Jim Steele with a little help from me 8 years ago or more. Hugh Mcdonald had a previous proto type he built himself this one was the first of the commercial mills made.

Thomas GERNER the owner has been kind enough to lend it to me for a couple of years while he lives in New Zealand.

The short story is if you or anyone need some more picks I can take some of any particular section you want to look at.
This machine has not got the guard atached so I can show the pully system.etc

I will be attaching the guard at some time soon. I was just outside 10 min ago having the first roll in a couple of months. Big fun.

I started to use some of the 1084 and 15n20 ? I got it from Kelly Couple from a thread on the forum. I am looking forward to seeing the result. I will try that vinigar thing as well.

Stay happy
