Which stainless steels do you like best for forging? Which are easiest to forge and heat treat? Thanks for your advice.

forging stainless is of no benifit at all in fact it can crack on you if it is improperly done unless you want to work out your frustration on somethig do it on and old car axle that should take care of it but have fun and beat the hell out of it

I will bet that Gerome is speaking from experience. I have never forged any stainless but would like to try stainless damascus sometime if someone would tell me how.

forging stainless is a lot harder than forging carbon steels ..
most of the stainless metals do not move under the hammer ..

they are totally niggly about the heat that you forge in .. if you strike stainless when it is too cold it will die on you.
cracking is a horrible problem ..

if you want to forge stainless make sure you have your patience with you and dont try to move the metal with brute force .. time your time and work with the heat you have.

I have never tried forging stainless that is hardenable but I often forge 316C and the like. I use them for guards and butt caps, etc. I just completed forgeing Capt. Hook's hook.
BTW, I use 316 and the like because I get scrap free.
