I may well have committed HI heresy. I purchased a pen with a cracked handle on a deal of the day. Since I am not as talented as others, I certainly would not be rehandling it. That led me to this compromise.

While it might now look atrocious, let me tell you... the field expedient fix of some tightly wrapped hockey stick tape has given it the most amazing feel in hand. I gave it a light dusting of dirt after the wrap to deal with the tackiness from the tape. Now it gives an incredibly good grip, the cap doesn't bite the hand as much, and with an equally ugly tape job on the tip of the sheath, it now won't poke holes in the lining of my bug out bag. This is a worker, not meant to be pretty, but damned if it doesn't seem perfect for the emergency go to bag. Enough chopping power for most reasonable tasks, small, lightweight and very cost-effective.

So I apologize if I did not do this blade justice, but it will have a long and productive life me thinks.

I'm sure it would rather be used than sit in a drawer.

Remember...

An ancient gnarled tree:
Too fibrous for a logger's saw,
Too twisted to fit a carpenter's square,
Outlasts the whole forest.

And here I was worried the ass whoopin was going to come from you!

Don ilbruche is subtle...someday, and that day may never come, you will start having dreams...wondering what that pen might look like with a Bocote handle or maybe something more exotic...then, who knows where it will go from there, you'll be sneaking a grinder into your apartment or having a custom handle put on...muhahahahah...

good luck : )

Mark

either way I like the Waterworld look to your handle...

I did the same thing with the Chitlangi I carried while in the 1-5 INF at Fort Lewis. Gave a good grip, and killed potential glare from pretty wood and buttcap.

Despite the export-grade polish, khuks were made to be used. If the wrap job makes it more functional, then do it!

Before the tape, I probably would've done a few things: condition the horn to minimize the crack, then fill with a little slow-set epoxy mixed with charcoal dust to match the color better. If wood, a little linseed oil and epoxy fill. Then wrap with tape to hold everything together.

Now I want to see a user report!

I seem to recall seeing someone else post some of their khuks which had received a similar treatment. As long as it's a real user, who cares what you do to it?

Well seeing as I live in a city, the only place to put it to use is on the landscaping of my apartment complex. Maybe this weekend I'll head out to something more countryish and give it a try. But with gas pushing $4.00 a gallon, you never know.

Ha, $10 a gallon here! But I live in a National Park so no driving for me!

Warden, if I may ask.... Where is here? ;) I know at the price of gas now there won't be any road trips for us this year and probably not in the future either. I'm thinkin I otta take the Camry down and trade it for a new Corolla.:grumpy: :(

Yvsa, 'Here' is good old England. Where we get screwed by HM Government on a regular basis! The good news is that my Passat 1.9 litre Diesel Stationwagon returns 60mpg on a careful highway run even after 118k miles of use. These new Diesels are amazing nothing like the old smokers of the past. Perform like a 3 litre petrol. I don't understand why they don't use them in the US!!! :-( Mind you the Imperial Gallon is slightly larger - based on 8 pints of 20floz versus the US 16floz. Makes beer drinking more interesting! Sorry to go so off topic!!! But I did end on beer....so not all bad!

I think one of the awesome things about the HI khuks is that they can be either workhorses *or* display pieces... or both.

The correct choice is... whichever one makes you happiest with the money you spent.

I have a non HI kuk that got the hockey tape treatment to build up the small diameter handle. Works great now and I love it.
