I just realized that I don't own a case knife! I have many different brands, US made and European. Western, Cattaragus (sp?), Imperial/Hammer brand, Boker, Gottelieb Hammesfarh, Robert klaas, and even some custom, but I somehow feel ashmed for not owning any Case knives. The closest I have is a knife by Kinfolks, who even made knives for Case.

I am a retail manager, so something on the small side would be better, I currently carry a 3 1/8" serpentine jack by Hammer Brand. This knife is light, rides well in my pocket, and the large clip is even too big sometimes. Sounds like I am a good candidate for the peanut line, but now just to figure out what I want.

I am open to suggestions, and even if I find an inexpensive one I may replace the scales anyway. So, what is your favorite small case knife? I will report back soon with some form of a case knife, but help me decide!

I prefer the chrome vanadium blades over Case's low end stainless, so going to a favorite dealer and searching for "CV" is how I generally choose a Case knife.

Here's nice looking peanut in CV:

The 'older' Case knives have a fine and friendly 'personality' that is not quite present in the newer ones.
Ebay regularly has 1970 and earlier Case folders in excellent using condition. They are also very collectible so the prices are a little higher.
Since you are wanting to 'make amends', why not go for the ones that are the best Case ever made ?
Spend a little time searching "Case knives" on ebay and you will find one (or more) that clearly calls your name.

Get thee a Swayback Jack and recite "the Secret of Steel" three times...

How bout a peanut?

It's hard to beat their Texas Jack (63032) in CV steel, shown here with my Queen Teardrop LL.

I'm guilty of the same sin :D since I don't have any Case knife, although I can plead half innocent since I don't buy (nor own) many knives and it's pretty hard to find Case knived (or any other American traditionals) here in Italy...
Maybe a peanut would serve you well...but lately I've come to think that, if I should get a Case (my first, or even my only one) it would be a swayback jack.

I just saw the picture of your knife on that other thread. That's a great little jack! No shame in that. Brands don't mean a thing, It's all about the knives themselves.
If you want a new one like it, there's always the medium texas jack, as previously mentioned. You can get one with black synthetic handles and rounded bolsters too (stainless unfortunately) but it's still a nice looking knife.

I don't own any production knives. I have a WT from Keith Johnson and a Zulu on the way from Menefee. But...If I did buy a Case knife it would be a Sowbelly with bumble bee derlin.

What a useful combination of blades with such a cool, old time looking handle

I like the CASE Pen-Knife, current ones only available in Yellow Delrin. Older ones in bone too, a nice sleek and unobtrusive knife, very light in the pocket.
Consider the CASE Eisenhower pattern too, many examples available. Their Mini Copperhead is worthwhile too.

Case's swayback jack is very popular with good reason. I prefer it's half stops and wharncliffe main blade for pull cuts and fingernail chores. CV strops to a nice edge and playing with patina is an added bonus.

Well, I've been known to be a little biased to the little peanut. It rides very well in dockers and business casual attire, and will cut anything you need to cut in a retail atmosphere. It's small enough to actually take out and use in front of people in public without the hue and cry going up. In fact, a peanut just may get compliments on being a cute little little knife from the women folks. I know mine has. You can get a very pretty little peanut in chestnut bone, amber bone, green bone, blue bone, red bone, stag, and even good old yella. I think there's even a G10 in there someplace if you like modern.

Xander, listen to me, you need a peanut. Any flavor will do to start with. And a peanut will put you in the numbers of the faithful.

Hard to go wrong with a SBJ in Chesnut bone and CV for a first case, also their Texas Jacks are pretty cool ( I especialy like the Amber bone in CV ).

I gotta agree about the Peanut but how about the Medium Stockman? The 63087 is a little smaller than the 6318.

It's funny that you posted this. I didn't have a Case in my collection either so I went out today and bought this Canoe.

I've got an Old Timer stockman with the 1095 carbon steel blades that will do for my traditional slip joint.

I don't like sway backs. I want a knife to swell INTO my palm, not away from it.

I'm thinking of a Russ Lock. Looks really handy; kind of has that classic Case style, but with one handed opening and a lock.

As a recent Peanut convert, I say Peanut! :D

The Swayback Jack is sweet but is comparable in size to what you already have. I carry the mini/tiny sized Case knives and Peanuts to work in a shirt and tie environment, no comments on my pocket knife (yet, anyway).

Good luck!

I personally have been carrying W.R. Case knives for a long while, not much else. My favorite is a 6344 pattern. They call it a medium jack but it is smaller than a 6318. It would fit in at the same size as your Hammer. You could go for a older Casexx or Case USA knife in a 6244 pattern. It would have good character and a pinned shield. The new Case shields leave me cold. They mostly look cheap. I really like the xx knives the bone seems to go from red to orange depending on aging. USA knives seem to be browner to me. If you like that one check a Queen #2 also.

Thanx for all the replies fella's! Lots of good suggestions, and the only ones I think wouldn't work for me would be the Barlow, I have carried my barlow and TL-29's only to have them be either to heavy (I carry lots of keys as well) or to bulky. Core - that bumblebee sow belly sure is pretty! Chief - that SBJ in chestnut is just an absolute classic, I am currently making a SBJ of my own design, so I may just go with it for now.

I am going to check out the local toy store (gun shop) today and who knows, I may just come home with one!
