I recently flew up to visit my parents and my girlfriend, since I do not carry all my knives with me at one stage I fly up with my knives and change them a bit for my trip back. Unfortunately I had a big wake-up call this time. The airline lost my luggage... with my sebenza in.. :grumpy:The airline found my luggage and returned it the next day, but I am so afraid of losing it again with the airlines since it is so expensive and I cannot afford a new one right now. So I have decided to insure my knives. My most expensive ones at least. I will not be carrying my sebenza for a while since I want it to be insured before I take it on another flight.....

I do apologize my friends, you guys are like family in this subforum....feels like I am letting a part of my soul behind....that bit that is left after my girlfriend of course :D

Flying is a PITA so I totally understand your concern. I love traveling and taking my favorite knives with me. Sadly, this is dangerous as I can lose my closest knives this way. I don't like to take a beater knife as I like to use my nice knives during my travels as this when they could be called upon the most.

A risk i have to take but it definatly sucks

Mail your knives ahead of you, so far I've been lucky and on the + side you can at least insure it.

Send to yourself at a hotel and add "arriving guest". Should be at front desk when you check in.

I don't blame you at all.....a wise precaution.
I am not sure where you were flying to but I had a similar experience a few years ago on Nationwide. They lost my case with 2 of my favorite edc blades from Johannesburg to Cape Town. I got the case back after bribing a Nationwide employee to look properly for it......
Now I leave 2 knives in Jhb with friends and when I go up for business I carry those. There is so much theft in the airports you just cannot trust them. As for checking my pistol in with the airlines.... I will never do it. One look at the quality of the "security" handling the firearms and you know you have a 50/50 chance of getting it back......

I understand the feeling. I just went through jury duty. When they were questioning prospective jurrors and asked my why I didn't want to be there, I said, "I've been carying a pocket knife since I was 8 years old and have trouble being with one." I was dismissed...

Thank you everyone for the tip of posting it ahead. I will look into that. I do not stay in a hotel. Just with my parents for the visit and when I am in Cape Town in my res. So posting it is still a bit of a hassle but worth looking into.

You can look for your bag on your own, but then you have to go into the basement of an airport and there are mountains of bags just lying around to be claimed. That is the exception and bags do get stolen.

I fly with BA and they do their luggage separate from the normal airlines. I also plastic wrap it in the hope to prevent theft. I do agree with you on checking in a firearm. It is a 50/50 chance of getting that back for sure. A recent hunter checked in his hunting rifle and knives and as he was standing to collect luggage out it came! knives were stolen and ammo. That is terrible.

On to good news. I received my quotes and will start insuring it, but it wont happen before I fly again, so my sebenza will have to stay behind for time being. I will post it down after it is insured. I have been spoiled by it! No other knife seems to attract me any more. here and there a few, but since I bought a seb....I just do not buy the amount of knives I use to.
