Yes, I used WD40 on one of my folders... Can it actually damage the knife?

no,i dont think it will damage it.
heres what I do (did) when i gunked one of my folders up.

turn on the hot water spigot and let it get HOT!,as hot as it will go...after its hot, flush it with the hot water, getting as much of that gunk out as you can. After its out,the hot water (in theory) should evaporate, due to its own heat.
after its had a little while to evaporate put some kind of lube in there (my favorite is tuf-glide) and work the action several times,to spread the lube out.

WD40 does have a place,IMHO in cleaning knives, but not as lubrication.

It won't hurt a thing. It's just not a good lubricant. It tends to be far more effective as a cleaner. Clean the knife and apply a good lubricant like Break free CLP or Militec-1 or Tuf-Glide or any other of your choice.

WD-40 won't hurt the knife but I wouldn't leave it on the knife. If you do. . .expect your knife to get gummed up with lint, dust, dirt, etc. . .

If you can. . .strip the knife down and clean it.

When I perform routine maintenance and lubing. . .hot soapy water works perfectly. I generally towel dry the parts to get the majority of water off/out. Then use a hair dryer ( on low heat ) to completely evaporate of water. Hint. . .when using a hair dryer. . .secure small parts before you turn the blower on !

I use Sentry Solutions Hi-Slip Grease on pivot parts. But, I'm using more White Lightning Wax Lubricant these days. . .it isn't oily nor does it attract and hold on to dirt causing a grinding paste to build up! I've also found that I don't have to strip down my knives as much to clean and relube.

Of course. . .tearing a knife down and putting it back together is a great deal of the fun ! :D

WD-40 works great for cleaning gunk like nylon and adhesive off the blade, but it's not a very good lube. I use BreakFree CLP to protect my blades and to lube my folders.
