So I forgot that my wife's birthday is coming up and need to have something shipped to her. She's been wanting a knife block and set of kitchen knives for a while and looking for recommendations around the $300 range. I don't need a lot of knives, just a few basics with maybe 4 steak knives should be fine. Are there any recommendations for best bang for buck around that range? I little higher or lower is fine.

I checked with the NEX, and they didn't have anything of much interest. Unfortunately there aren't any major department stores around my base. Only walmart and target and I'd prefer to get a better quality set than what they offer.

Well, my first reaction would be to plan a little in advance and buy her a custom set. But that would probably cost you quite a bit more than $300. I will tell you to avoid any set made in China, no matter what the name! My wife dropped some serious cash a few Christmas's ago on a J.A. Henckle set. I was never happy with them because they just wouldn't hold an edge very long. I finally noticed one day that they were made in China. Mystery solved!

If I were out to buy a set and couldn't wait or pay for customs, I'd probably lean toward the higher end Shun, Henckle or Wustoff's.

Take a look at Ryuu VG10 Damascus 8-Piece Knife Set with Block. Look & specs similar to Shun but cost less.

if shuns are being mentioned i'd rather get a set of tojiro DP over other vg10 as they are bang for the buck.

=D

The Ryuu ones look nice but are made in china, which I'd like to avoid. The others are over budget. So far I'm liking the victorinox 11 piece set. Does anyone know what material they are made of or where they are made? Thanks.

Steel type is 1.4110 (or speculated 12C27). VG10 at 60+rc will performs better than either one. And the vg10 blade made in Japan however the whole package assemblied in China.

Victorinox (formerly Forschner) are good low RC knives. Just learn to use the steel well, then these knives would perform ok.

Other option for your $300, get something like:
1. Shun block - 22 slot (yeah, room for future addition/addiction :D
2. a cheap set of steak knives
3. assumming she likes short knives: 18cm petty (or 16.5cm santoku), 15cm boning, 10cm paring
4. cheap ss small cleaver or 210cm/8" butcher knife
5. a 800 grit sharpening stone to start... rulers don't cut very well ;)

Take some friendly advice from someone who has been happily married for many years. Buy her something personal for her birthday. Then buy some creepy knives for the kitchen. Just sharing. :)

I ended up ordering the All-purpose block set from Warther. $450 shipped with engraving. To me, made in USA and CPM S35VN is well worth the extra cost. She's been wanting a good knife block for a while, and the engraving makes it personal. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Nice, I am just checking this as I burned through 2 cases of onions with my 9" Warther thinking these knives just don't get the credit they deserve.
