Anyone here know what fork truck forks are made of? I have a chance to get 2 old bent fork truck forks and I want to know if the steel is usefull for anything.

Thanks

Probably not very much carbon . IIRC recent production has been cast iron for 2x4 and forged for 4x4 !

Maybe it will make some interesting guards? What do you think? Is it worth storing in my garage for the next 3 years?

The fork specs that I have seen before were 4150 heat treated to 42-45.

This material is .50 carbon and high alloy on the other end.

Darrel's right (as usual), forklift forks are 4140/4150. They are highly saught after by blacksmiths with power hammers. They are the ideal die making steel, very shock resistant. If you don't want them, I'll buy them from you if you could ship the things and depending on the price. As far as blade material, I don't think so, but could be use for furniture as someone mentioned earlier.

Edited: Whoops. I see you're in Wisconsin, I think the shipping would be prohibitive. I better try and find some closer to the house. I'd hang onto that stuff Michael, you'll use it someday.

Sorry , must have read the post at an early hour - I thought it said FORD Truck !!! ........Yes 4140 or 4150 seems logical !!

Would fork lift, fork steel be good to make tools for the hardy hole in my anvil?
I think have access to some locally

I have an anvil at work I made from a broken blade. The uprite end, Makes a great anvil. Can't dent it with a 2 pound ball pien. When I leave there it is comming home with me!

Anybody ever hear one of these break? I heard one break a few years ago, It's a combination of a Loud crack like a rifle shot and a clang, I heard it from about 50 yards away in a stamping factory over the din of all the machinery running. (wearing hearing protection)

Yes, it's ideal for that!

I'm currently using a donated piece of forklift fork steel as my anvil. Just a big 400+ lb. rectangle that I flattened one edge of. Works like a dream.
