Long time lurker here, posting for the first time in hopes that someone here might be able to help!

My (27F) brother (29M) is a knife fanatic. He’s a big nerd about them and loves talking about his new ones. He always has a knife that clips with his belt, as well as a bigger one for more durable tasks, in his bag with him. His birthday is on the 22nd, and he turns 30 this year, and its been on my mind to get him a nice knife for his birthday since I got a raise this past year, but I’m at a loss for what to get him, and Google just isn’t cutting it.

I know he uses reddit to find ideas for what knives to look for on road shows, so I’m hoping someone here can help me out. He has a knife for everything, but I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a Formal Knife or something he could have with him for any special events? Something sort of weird and maybe a little decorative or stylistic but also functional and strong.

Not sure if something like this exists, but any sort of suggestions are totally welcome?

Also this is like actually my first post ever so I’m very sorry if this isn’t formatted or posted correctly!

Not sure what you mean by formal but higher end folders that are beautiful and functional would be Chris Reeve Knives CRK.

Be basically a collectible as well as an EDC.

Good a place as any to start to look.

Profile named David that says you are a 26 male but you say you are a 27 year old female?

And if you are a long-time lurker, you should know that you can find almost anything depending on your budget. So more info is needed.

For functional but nice looking, I'd also recommend a CRK, probably a Sebenza.

This is my own dress knife. A little small, but it fits the occasion and plays the role of dress knife well.

As much as you want to have that perfect moment when he opens it and sees the perfect knife he always wanted.

without a lot more info about his tastes and current collection you are more likely to spend your money on something he will only like because it came from you.

Buying something for a collector rarely goes well. (Most of us have a collection of knives we treasure because they were gifts. But wish the giver had saved their money.)

Find a way to include him in the process. Make a day out of it. Have a nice lunch and go shopping together. The time spent with you will be treasured.

Or buy him something you collect that he knows nothing about. So you can put your experience into getting him the best one possible.

Check out Olamic cutlery. Or maybe a Spyderco Techno 2, Euroedge or Kapara.

Welcome.

What's your budget? :)

Like others have said, when I think of a formal/do it all knife, I think Chris Reeve Knives. Elegant and built to ridiculous standards, it's an investment knife that is made to be carried and used. Fantastic warranty with an offer from the company to clean and restore the knife when it starts to show carry wear. I've often thought of the Sebenza and Inkosi knives as a Daniel Craig era James Bond. Sophisticated yet brutish and strong when needed. Maybe a bit "outdated" but carries as a true classic.
These will set you back over $400.

If you are looking to spend half that, I think the Zero Tolerance 450 is a great formal/edc. It flips out and locks with authority (but is not a switchblade or automatic). It has a sleek, modern design and carries very light in the pocket.

In the $100 and under range, depending on his style, Kizer has some very nice offerings at reasonable prices. They are well made in China, so the labor cost savings is passed on to you.

For the same money with a little less flair and "formality", you could get him an entry level Spyderco like the Endura. Just depends on his size and use needs.

Once again, welcome!

You said he generally carries modern folders with a clip, but you would like to get something more formal? Like no clip?
When I wear dressier clothes (once or twice a year), I usually drop a traditional in my pocket. It really needs to be small enough that it can lay in the bottom of the pocket without "printing." If you're thinking traditional:
$ Rough Rider
$$ Case, Buck or Boker
$$$ GEC
If your brother enjoys a beer or two, he may like one from Boker's Beer Barrel series.
My favorite patterns are canoes and barlows. But that's me.

If you want something more modern, William Henry make some very pretty folding knives that might be considered formal.

That's just a start.

This is a strange account. You say this is your first post and yet you've clearly posted before as early as May and that post generated 3 pages of responses. Also that post weirdly linked to a site. You've previously talked about modifying and reviewing knives and you're now saying you're a 27 y/o woman with a username "David" whose brother is into knives. Color me skeptical.

Good detective-ing, seems our words & knowledge is being stolen under false pretenses for commercial gain.

my guess is his sister used his bf account? - that seems to be the only reasonable, simple explanation - not really a big deal tbh

but, yes, other details are needed as everyone else pointed out
