Formula 1 vs. street cars

Haven't seen that one in years. Thanks!

The best part is right at the end when Murray Walker says, "He's playing with them." and you see Coulthard just behind the E50 then get in the throttle and just rocket past both cars. -If you didn't notice, watch it again, it's fan-damn-tastic! :D  :D

This season looks to be the best in quite a while. (Unless you're a Tifosi. ;) ) Even then, Rubino looks good and really Michael still has a full "regular" season's worth of races left to get in gear.

That clip was hilarious. That's why F1 is the only open wheeled racing worth watching.

Ferrari will be back at Bahrain with the new F2005 this Sunday. You can watch the race on Speed Channel.

Cool.

I remember reading an article about cars racing against motorcycles. As I recall, almost any stock rocket bike will wipe up any stock road car around a racetrack, BUT a race-prepped car will wipe up a race-prepped bike. Turns out that stock rocket bikes are about 90% "there" already, while race-only mods to a car will give incredible gains in cornering and braking. Ultimately, the race car's greater tire patch lets it win.

I saw something similar on TV years ago. But it was between a Fiat Bravo HGT, a Ferarri 550 (not sure) and a Ferrari formula 1. If i'm not mistaken Eddie Irvine was still driving it.

It's amazing how the formula 1 can pick up speed that fast.

as far as bikes go motor trend or one of the car mags had a suzuki GSXR 1100 against a viper on a pretty long track, both stock, the viper won pretty easy it could go into the corners harder and accelerated close enough,

Ah, makes me want to trade in the minivan ;)

I read an article recently that you can buy a used Ferrari F1 for about 1.8 million US

The wife doesn't think it's the idea of the century though

Trunk space is limited. ;)

Great clip. Found a link to an article in the discussion section which is worth a gander: http://www.minerva.com.au/ph/Ru/ . Most telling quote from the article:
When the three cars were switched to a flat-out blast-and-brake test - max gas to 160kmh [about 99mph] followed by full-force braking - the A160 took a snail-like 35.15secs.
* The E50 went almost supercar quick and more than halved the A-Class effort at 15.45secs.
* But the 750hp, 750kg McLaren needed less than a quarter of the E50's time - a staggeringly short 4.2secs - to get the job done.
4.2secs for 0-100-0 . !

Yes, but the E-series has heated seats; the McLaren does not.

The E-series is available with with a six-disc CD changer; the McLaren is not.

The E-series comfortably seats five. The McLaren does not comfortably seat even one.

The E-series has twelve air bags. The McLaren has none.

Since Gollnick is not German, I'm guessing he owns an E-series :D

No, the E-series are a bit slow for my liking.

The E is for enormous. I had one as a service loaner for a few days, though. It was like driving a city block. It was huge. You could have carried a queen-size mattress and box spring in the trunk with no problem. I got into the back seat, once, just for fun. It's nice back there.

Holy Moly that's fast! To think the old 427 Cobras were considered rockets when they did the same thing in about 12 seconds. Wonder what the McLaren's quarter mile ET is?

motor trend did an article about the cobra running 0-100-0 in 12 seconds, tried it in one and couldnt even get close, reason i remember is they blew a headgasket IIRC on carrol shelbys personal 427 cobra trying................they concluded this was a myth. it was funny 'cuz carrol was there kept saying the guy wasnt revving it high enough, he finally over revved it lol. he said its very intimidating to blow carrols personal cobra while he watched.

as far as 0-100-0 in 4.2 seconds i would have to see it to believe it, no street legal car will do that imho, IIRC the cobra was running 16's or so, ya gotta remember these are old cars w/out very good brakes/etc. again, i would have to see to belive any street legal car doing that. ya would certainly need slicks at least. its sure easier to write about it vs do it. in the old days lotsa folks said there cars ran 12's in the 1/4 mile, then lost to my nova which ran 13.20s at its best. easier to say than do.

I believe ya' about the Cobra. I was just working from memory.

The 4.2 sec cited by enkidu is for a full on F1 car. I tend to believe that after seeing them perform over hundreds of races.

Just for fun, Ferrari ran their 2003 F1 car against a fighter jet on wet pavement:

http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/t-35340.html

The Ferrari ran 600 meters (.37 mi.) in 9.4 sec at a speed of 294Km/hr (182mph). Two thirds of that (400m) is roughly a quarter mile. I know its only an aproximation with lots of variables, but 2/3 of 9.4 is 6.2 sec for a quarter mi. @ 120 mph and I'd expect some loss of acceleration above 100 mph to add disproportionately to the ET. With their massive carbon fiber disk brakes pulling down a minimal weight I'd say 4.2 sec 0-100-0 is a possibility.

The E series ain't that big. If you wanted speed you could always get the E55....hehehe...5.5 litres of AMG tuned power.

I drove my dad's S once and even that didn't feel that big. He got car jacked and the S was stolen, So he replaced it with a BMW 7 series long wheelbase. He's been complaining about how big it is. It does have cool electronics though.

They should have tested it with
THIS Swedish monster. Fastest production car in the world.
