Hi,
I have just received my custom spike hawk from Dana Turner and it's great, so I thought I would share some pics. Its similar to the rogers' rangers hawk, but it has a little longer blade (4.5") and a bit narrower edge (3") so it resembles more of an easter fighting hawk. Haven't had a chance to try out yet but probably will over the weekend, so I'll share later on. I am very impressed with the balance and the weight, it's much lighter than my CS norse hawk, which i certainly didn't expect. I would guess that's mostly due to the pretty thin blade. Also service and shipping was wonderful. I live in Eastern Europe and my hawk was forged and delivered in about 4 weeks. There's one thing I am not certain about and I would be very thankful if you share your opinion: along the top and bottom of the blade there are very small cracks from where the two pieces of steel were welded together, you can see it in one of the pics. Is this normal or something to worry about?

Regards,
Maxim

P.S. pictures are in the thread below....

HEY! Your pictures are not showing! No fair!

If you are worried about it, contact Dana. He won't leave you hanging. JME Skinner.

I am sorry for the picture failure, I've got some links to work now, so you can take a look...

P.S. I got a reply from Dana regarding my question about the cracks. He said it's purely cosmetical and nothing to worry about. Said the head is guaranteed at least for his lifetime.. :) Just great doing business with him. I highly recommend FT to anyone looking for a high quality tomahawk at a decent price... just can't get any better a combination between service/product/price... (Especially talking about a pretty much custom hawk)

I don't know about the cracks, but that new design is really nice!

Was it much more expensive than the regular FT Rogers model?

No, it wasn't. Surprisingly, it was the same price. I've also done a bit of customization myself now, some leather work, but don't have pics yet. I'll post again soon..

As I mentioned, I edited the design a bit and did a bit of leather work on my own. The pics are a bit crappy, but that's because I don't have my dig camera. I think it came out really nice, and is now pretty much exactly what I've wanted - a combination between a historic look and a high quality user.. When I ordered the hawk I was thinking that I could throw it as well, but I think I've grown too attached to it so I'll avoid letting it fly out of my hand too much

......as to the little cracks you are reporting in the top and bottom edges, I think it is not anything to worry about. I have a dozen or so hand forged hawks from various makers and some of them show similar small imperfections in the welding of the softer outer steel pieces to the inner layer of harder steel. None of those hawks have shown any weakness or failure in the uses I've put them to. It seems that such small imperfections are common in the hand forging process. They appear even on hawks costing three times as much as your FT hawk. I would not be afraid to throw your new toy, by the way. I can't imagine you would hurt it. Have some fun!
