Im using cowboy terminology to cut the edge off the serious nature of this topic. It is not that I do not treat it with the gravity it merits . I hope there is reason to suppose the light at the end of the tunnel may not be as dim as has been shown in recent years . Due to events in the world that will proabably have reprecussions for decades to come we have decided to tighten up security for our loved ones and for our native lands .
Either by sticking it to them where they live or taking more care in who we allow to live with us we have changed our world for all time . It is not that I think we go too far it is that the barriers we raise will be much harder to do without once we erect them .
I have friends (smart sucessful friends) who think they should fort up . Their own land their own water their own food and come what may you aint gettin in unless we want you to come in . These people are not part of some doomsday cult and are fun loving business owners with others having good careers . While I do not think they are wrong I think that if they are right it would be much more difficult than they could ever suppose .
I do not think that diplomatic measures ever did much good with unreasonable people unless you were willing to support your reasoning in a manner unreasonable people can understand . This usually means getting their attention first . It is my personal hope that we can achieve this before we go down a road we can never return from .

My idea of fortin' up is a case of beer, enough salami and mustard for the weekend and a dozen DVDs I haven't seen...

And I'm armed...so don't get any ideas about *my* beer.

If its American Budweiser that is . I find its more refreshing than the high test 5 percent . A good way to start off an evening .
As for the fortin up part ? It could just be seen as people becoming self sufficient . It is the reasoning behind it that gives me pause .

This reminds me of a Buddhist friend who called me up just before Y2K to tell me he had just purchased 30 gallons of water and enough food for a month.
He asked me if I had stocked up on food and water and I replied,
"No, but I do have guns and lots of ammo"
Dead silence for about 20 seconds and then he says,
"Ummm, if anything happens can I come over with my food and water?"
I still chuckle when I think about it.

Cheers,

Ted W.

Come to find out...my father-in-law played on this very statue as a young child in its former home in Visalia, California...before locals realized its significance in history. Look up "James Earl Fraser" sometime....

Anyway...we brought back a post card...he was tickled when he saw it.

Oh, and my boys' idea of "fortin' up" includes all sorts of non-palatables...in fact, it's mostly just toys. :p

And yes, they "fort up" almost every day.....*sigh* :(

An excerpt from the link....

"To some Native Americans, however, it is viewed as a reminder of defeat and subjugation a century ago."

Many of us recognize that we were bone tired and defeated but we were never subjugated.

  1. To bring under control; conquer. See Synonyms at defeat.
  2. To make subservient; enslave.
One of these days I may learn to see the beauty of the statue as a work of art but I strongly doubt it.:(

I,ve only seen that statue as a painting or print . All it ever meant to me was weariness . I won,t be able to look at it in the same manner .

As for my buddies ? It is more of a process than an event . It is the consequences of the outcome that gives me pause . There are too many things we have come to take for granted to understand their true worth when they are gone . I think they see a domino effect . I respect that . I just think that those dominos would fall in all directions with no rhyme or reason . You can,t close the barn door if the horse has kicked it down .
