is it appropriate to post in say the knifemakers forum or sheath makers forum saying ...."who wants to make ma an xxxx" .. the purpose would be to find a maker for my particular item,
No. The maker forums are for makers to discuss the making of things.
In the case you suggest, use the appropriate wanted-to-buy forum in the Exchange forums. In some cases, there may be other forums where such a post might also be appropriate; for example, if you were seeking a sheath for a Balisong-style knife, that would be topical in the Balisong forum too since it is specific to Balisong knives. So, there isn't always one-and-only-one answer to where a specific thread is appropriate.
This raises another point of etiquette -- and rules: we ask that a member post only one thread at a time on a given subject. So, in the hypothetical case of seeking a sheath for a Balisong-style knife, do not post your question in both forums at once. If your first posting of the question does not garner the response you want, then you may repeat it in the second forum; but we suggest that you allow the first thread TWO WEEKS before starting a second.
also, what about price checks? do you guys find this annoying or helpful?... i ask because i don't see alot of threads of this sort...
I'm not sure what you mean by "price check?" The monitary value of knives is a legitimate topic that is of interest to knife collectors and enthusiasts and so it is occationally discussed here.
There are a couple things we don't allow that you might be referring to. First, "Is the price on the Model ABC knife on cheapKnife dot com really cheap?" This is a sort of what we call a "deal spotting" post; it doesn't contain any discussion. As I like to say, "There's no meat on that bone, so why have you brought it to the table?" And the bottom line on it really is: use google for yourself; posting that question -- which you could answer for yourself with two minutes of googling -- is just sloth and doesn't do anything for the forum.
A second troublesome post can be in the form of, "Here is a knife I have. What is it worth?" This type of thread causes confusion because gold- and higher-class members are permitted to ask such questions but registered users are not. In the past, some registered users have tried to use this sort of post to offer a knife for sale in circumvention of the requirement for paid membership to advertise on the site and so we have had to prohibit it for registered users.
{I} want to do my best to conform to the boards way of doing things, and basically help keep the board clean from drivel..well at least some of it and keep everyone happy....
so those are my basic question, of things that i've either done or have thought about doing here, and was just wondering how this comes off.....
In general, if you are not sure if a thead you would like to start is appropriate in a given forum, ask the forum's moderator privately BEFORE you post it.
There are two sorts of threads that, as a moderator, upset me most: first, the thread that begins, "I don't know if this is ok (moderators feel free to move or close it) but I'm going to charge ahead and post it anyway..." A) Thank you for graciously giving me permission to move or close your thread... but I don't need it. B) if you are unsure of whether your post is ok, ask me first; I love to help people avoid problems, but I hate cleaning up their messes.
Second, threads that being, "I know that this is wrong, but I'm going to post it anyway..." Don't get me started... oh, you got me started. This is just disrespectful of the site in general.
got any other forum faux pas or annoyances i or other should know about? besides the usual..use the search function, spell check, don't be a *** hat and all of that, haha .
Two: First, replacing a few letters with asterisks does not make a cuss work appropriate. And, second, if you have questions about the rules, either PM or e-mail a moderator privately (again, it is our joy to be of-service by helping members avoid problems but our bane to clean up after those who cause problems) or post them in our Service and Support forum.
