Forum knife?

Right. So, there's been some talk of a special run Kershaw sub-forum knife; something we who hang out here (to the neglect of our other responsibilities, most likely) can call "our own." It seems to me that, if such a thing should happen to come to fruition in the future, we should have a forum logo, designed by forum members.

I have a modest example here. :D

Now, obviously I didn't create a logo, I just put some lettering on it. Anything I might have tried to create freehand would likely look horrible, so I stopped while I was ahead. But I suspect the creative minds here on this forum can handle the challenge. What about it? What can you come up with, that might look good on such a mythical creature? It's gotta be better than my simplistic attempt.

Hey riffraff,
I don't have time to work on a design at the moment, but just wanted to say I think it's a great idea!!!

Who knows if it could ever actually happen, but how cool would that be to have a knife to encompass all that we do and say here on the forum!?!?!:)

Hmmmmm, I wonder if there is anyone here who has any pull with the big guys up in Tualatin??????;)

To fit all that in, the Kershaw Forum knife would have to be the Outcast AND it would take both sides! :D

Personally, should ever come to pass, I'd like to see the markings on the blade instead of the handle, have the date on it i.e. 2008 or 2009, and have them serialized.

I love this idea, but please make it a botique run, like a S30V Black bladed blur or something :D. It'd say something like the above that riff raff had.

How many would have to be pre ordered before Kershaw would perform a run of X model of Knife? If everyone here could agree on a knife () How could we all get this to happen?

I don't know, there are so many great Kershaws, it would be really tough. But I bet we could all get together and agree on something for a cause as cool as this one!!!:D

i read in the kershaw catalog for things like engraving the min is 25. but if you are talking retooling i would imagine quite a bit more.

Well, the idea came up in the CB Shallot thread, SPX, so I used a Shallot as a canvas (which I shamelessly stole from Kershaw's web site). To that end, the Shallot's blade doesn't really lend itself to adding a logo, IMHO, unless it's a really small one. Especially if a third of the blade is ZDP. I guess a JYD2 would afford greater blade real estate, though. :) (or the Outcast you mentioned!)

Knivesandguns, is the CB Shallot enough of a boutique run? Again, that's where the idea came up. That run may be too far along by now, though.

I kinda envisioned forum members coming up with designs and submitting them. We could vote them up or down with a separate thread using the survey function (limited to 10 per thread). If there's a bunch of ideas we do a run-off to narrow the field. The down side is the "elephant is a mouse designed by committee" syndrome. People would need to not become too attached to their ideas, just in case they were shot down by the rest of the members. Basically, if the community decides your design sucks, it's out. :( I think if we're careful, we can avoid the elephant-mouse thing.

What say you?

Now, to have any chance of our Kershaw overlords smiling upon this idea, the final designs would need to be fairly hi-res, and in a lossless graphics format like GIF, PNG, TIFF, etc. I can do the conversion, but I can't make a small drawing big, and have it look good. So start with a large canvas and change your zoom to something comfortable.

EDIT: The design or scanned sketch doesn't have to be ON a picture of a knife. We can always do that later for visualization. I'm thinking of kind of a virtual graphic brainstorming session here online just to hash out ideas, where we post anything from crude ideas to more refined concepts.

On to another point. When I did that quick little GIMP graphic, I debated whether to say "Kershaw Knife Forum" or Kershaw Knives Forum." After all, it says "Kershaw Knives" at the top of this page. It just did seem to roll off the tongue as well in this context.

I'd like to see the new 14C28N ENER-G II used as a platform...IF its going to have a satin finish! And again, marked on the blade and serialized!

I think this would help to put this excellent knife into some people's hands that wouldn't otherwise buy one.

I like the Ener-G II, it is quickly becoming my favorite knife.

I'm in! What about using a R.A.M since it has a fairly wide blade to allow for engraving and i've been wanting to get my hands on one!

I think that we need to be realistic. There are only two ways this could happen:

(1) we do an order big enough that it is consistant with the way Kershaw does special orders for dealers/resellers. I'm not sure what the minimum quantity for something like that would be, but my guess is around 500 pieces, way more than we can hope to handle; or

(2) pick something already in process, rely on Kershaw's good graces to allow us to cull out enough to do a forum knife and get a relatively simple marking that doesn't create unusual costs or trouble.

There's no way it will be practical to create a knife that will satisfy everyone or be designed by the forum committee.

The idea of using the in-process composite blade Shallot was an attempt to make this something practical and possible. If we want it to happen, the most we should be discussing is what simple marking we would like, and see if that works. In some of the prior discussions, a Shallot with ZDP balde seemed to be one of the most popular choices, and this one is at a price point that will allow broad participation. So now we have a chance, maybe. Let's see if we can get it done; to do that, we need to keep it simple.

I agree with you acourvil. It has to be something already in production, or close to release.

I've started a poll here that will start a process of drilling down to the most popular offering. There will be a series of these. The next one will address price, blade material, etc. This should lead us to a logical conclusion. Each poll will stay open for 5 days.
