Hi all

I was thinking about my up and coming marriage (April 2004). I know it's a long way off but it will sneak up on me before I know it.

I would love to cut the cake with something made by HI. I was at mom's wedding about 3 weeks ago and I said she could use my Chiruwa, she didn't by my Gran (surprise) was very keen on the idea !!

So I want to design an HI wedding cake knife.

All ideas welcome !!

Regards and blessings
Brendan

I think I would turn the idea around: take your favorite khukuri or HI blade and design a fitting wedding cake. Maybe something in the form of an Ox-head? :)

The handle on your Tarwar is long enough for you and your bride to each have a hand on it when cutting the cake, as is customary and proper. Mum'll just have to understand.

Good thinking! Just make sure it has plenty of raspberry filling for full effect. Nothing says marital bliss like a blood-spattering decapitation :D .

Brendan:

At my recent nuptials, my bride and I had a traditional English wedding cake (she's a UK national by way of Iran).

After much struggle, I finally managed to cut through all of the icing and marzipan, when my Mom yelled out "you should've used a khukuri". I agree - it would've made things much easier.

SS40 actually DID use one on his wedding cake. Hopefully not with a full backswing.

Brendan - glad to be of service.

First concern - make sure your soon-to-be-swmbo is in on this as well. You don't want to just sneak it on her...she'll make you pay for it sooner or later...;)

Second concern - whatever you use, make sure you thoroughly clean and inspect the knife to be free of grunge, dirt, etc. Even if all you do is smear the cake in each other's face, most of the knives coming out of the HI shop are made for working in the field and not the kitchen.

Here's a design to cut your teeth on...
(ok, ok, bad pun...:D:D )

Overall length - 18.5"
- similar in length to an 18" AK (albeit, much lighter)
- should be easy to wield/control, yet be stylistic
- I estimate it's weight to be around 24 oz.
- Should cost around $150 (just my estimate)

Handle length - 6.5" (including bolster)
- large enough for both hands to hold it
- wood would be more traditional (but up to you Brendan)

Blade length - 12" (w/ magic polish)
- the blade is peaked on top to resemble a khukuri
- however, the bottom is more rounded like a traditional cake knife
- standard HI cho - don't mess with a good thing, right?

Spine thickness - 5/16"
- don't want to make it too much of a monster... ;)

The gently curved cutting edge should look enough like a wedding knife to not scare grandma ( ) and allow for a "rocking" action in the cutting motion to make it easier to cut the cake.

Admittedly, it must be hard to cut a cake with a khukuri, but hopefully a few of the difficulties could be solved with this design (vs. an AK or Sirupati)

Design #2

After looking at #1 for a while, I thought I could go ahead and align the handle with the blade.

Before, I was worried that too strong of an angle would make cutting the cake difficult.

So, here's the revised design:

negative space in color...

The bottom one has more space underneath it and it is more "aligned" with the blade.

Here's the real reason why I made this design...

Compare cutting a wedding cake with a YCS (on top):

That is fantastic Dan, Wow !!

I thought I would surprise Jilly but I took your advice, it turns out that Jill has already planned that part of the wedding and my Gran (again) has promised her the knife she used for her wedding !!

Drat - foiled !!

It is really cool to see what you can do with computers Dan. Thanks for the help !!

Glad to be of help - sure was fun.

Maybe in a while, this will see circulation again...

Brendan, if left to us men weddings would take place in T-shirts and dungarees. To women, on the other hand, it is the single most important ritual of their adult life. If your bride to be wants to cut the cake with a frilly sentimental knife, do it with a smile lad, and remember it's her special day.

hehe !!

this is why I love this forum, where would I be without you guys.

Probably in the ER with a cracked skull from trying to plan the wedding. I want to give her the best day possible so frilly knife it is !!

still, sometime it might be interesting to make all the same. As 'the HI fancy serving knife' or something? If nothing else, give the kamis a good laugh ;)
